Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host a round of the 2008 MotoGP World Championship, with all three World Championship classes expected to take part.

The announcement of the race, set for Sept. 14, 2008, will be made July 16 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A press release issued by the Speedway stated, “Please join us at 3:30 p.m. (local time) Monday, July 16 as motorsports history is made during an announcement in the Plaza Pavilion at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

It’s expected the announcement will come just days before the release of the provisional 2008 MotoGP World Championship calendar.

Earlier this month the race was confirmed by a Dorna official, who said it was only a matter of timing on the announcement.

With the U.S. hosting a second MotoGP round, the calendar would expand to 19 races, unless a race gets dropped. It was originally believed that China would leave the calendar, but more recent indications are that the Turkish GP won’t return.

With IMS expected to host all three classes, it leaves little room for the AMA Superbike Championship. AMA officials have said the 2008 calendar will look similar to this year's. But there may be a shift in dates. The Sept. 14 IMS MotoGP date could conflict with the AMA's stand-alone date at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Slowly but surely motorcycle racing is gaining ground in popularity. I heard that last weeks race was on CBS, which I hope went well with the ratings. Motorcycle programming is lacking in this country. It might be due to the fact that all of us would rather be out riding then watching other people ride. :sly: Anyway...yay for us getting more racing!

I’m pretty sure there’ll be some modification to the banking, a chicane or something. Also I’m almost certain the new F1 contract with the USGP that has allegedly been signed has asked for the infield section to be made quicker, so possibly that will affect the MotoGP track.

Perhaps not, they run the AMA Superbikes on a section of the banking at Daytona don't they?

I hope they don’t modify it. That’ll be one hell of a corner if they don’t, though. So much so that I almost can’t see it happening.

I not following  What does making the infield quicker have to do with the banking?

I'm not following MotoGP at all so this doesn't help me at all.....but i do understand one thing,if they modify the Infield section to be "quicker",then it will affect both the MotoGP and F1 circuit layout. Its awesome if you could see the riders battling out at the last corner (and a wipeout there could spell disaster...ohhhh the agony...) unless they are running anti-clockwise....but nevertheless,it would be great for motor racing fans.

Nothing. I was talking about two separate things in that original post.

But as mnm_bmx said, there could be an incredible accident at the banking, whether the circuit was being run forwards or backwards. It would be approached and taken at such high speeds, and with no run-off it would just be incredibly dangerous.

So is Laguna Seca still going to be on next year too, or just Indianapolis? I'm not happy if it means no more Laguna Seca.
