OK So Ive got cable now and the PC is really fast compared to dial-up ( as it should be !).

I went to my PC last night switched on and it wouldnt load my personal settings at the start-up page, my icons went over to the default left hand side view and my GT90 pic didnt load up either, it just defaulted to the standard blue screen. My ie icon was there but when clicked on the internet wizard came up as if Id not had the inet before ??

My g/f tried it this morning and the promp was to go to the advanced option in the control panel under the system option and do something with the virtual memory size (I presume it was to increase it). Ive checked on work's pc and the virtual memory size is 384 MB and its the same on her work's pc also. The virtual memory on the duff pc at home is 4065 MB ????? It seems rather excessive !!

The only change I have made recently was to D/L a pop-up stopper from google, I think it was Adnuker (I deleted it a I didnt like it though).

Previously when all was well if I started-up and left the PC for like 5 mins or so without clicking on IE, I get loads of ads appearing ? I havent got a firewall and I think thats why but Im not sure.

So if you're still alive after reading all this and you have and ideas whatsoever Id really appreciate it !!! I cant do without GTP any longer !

Thankyou

Big J.

Sounds like your user profile got corrupted. I'm not surprised by the ads you have on your computer. Broadband + no firewall = adware galore. Install Ad-aware or Spybot. You also may need more specialized applications to get rid of some. Visit http://www.spywareinfo.com/

I have the adaware function but Im not sure Ive got it set-up correctly. The way I use it at the moment is everytime I shut-down I open adaware scan the PC and delete any files or trackers it finds, should it work whilst Im on-line and stop pop-ups and ads etc ??

How would I go about sorting out my user profile if it is corrupted and how can I know for sure that it is ?

Thanks for replying Viper - Im in need of some real help !!!

Just run ad-aware and click on scan. If it's finding stuff everytime you run it, you really need a firewall.

To delete your profile: backup your files first. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > click on your profile > Delete the account. Now, you can create a new one.

Well adaware does find something every time I run it. Its stuff like "tracking cookies" and "miners" and quite often files are installed and even icons on the desktop.

So you said I need to delete my profile - Is that as my current one is more than likely corrupt ?

How do I back up my files ??

Will I need to re-install anything when I create a new account ?

Have you any ideas on the virtual memory prompt that the pc is bringing up ??

Yes, the profile you said in the first post. Make sure you have another administer account you can login to and create the new profile.

Do you have files in your My Documents directory that you want to save? When you delete the account, it deletes everything in My Documents for that account. Just move your files to another directory outside of My Documents. For example: C:\Temp\. When you create the new account, move your files back to My Documents.

No, you don't have to reinstall anything.

Your virtual memory page is set too high. Set it to the default.

Yes, the profile you said in the first post. You mean with the icons where I want them and my own screensaver? Make sure you have another administer account you can login to and create the new profile. At the risk of sounding really thick - how do I check for another account or get one if I dont have another one ??

Do you have files in your My Documents directory that you want to save? Yes I do but your instructions below are simpe enough - even for me to follow !!

Meaning set it to 384 MB like the PC at work ? Or will there be a default option there for me to see ??

Control Panel > User Accounts

See if there are at least one administrator account. If there isn't one, create one.

I see - so if theres not one there to choose from just make another up so that when I delete the current one I can choose the new one I already made !! Makes sense to me !

Thanks a lot for your help with this Viper - I'll let you know how I get on

Well I said I'd let you know how I got on so here goes.

I scrapped my old tower and got a new one !!!

Its got an Athlon 2600 Processor, 512 RAM, 48* CD/DVD writer, CDplayer, 128 bit graphics card, windows XP installed, and an AVG anit-virus programme as well.

I also got a new mouse and a new keyboard and the tower has been made with a " high case", you dont need to unscrew to get it off, theres these clip things.

My old PC had a very very old processor and the CD drive was an 8 speed !!!!!

@viper - I registered at the forums address you gave me and they seem very knowledgable and helpful so thankyou very much for the help and the information.
