Morgan SLR 1964

Announced at the UK Racing Car Show in 1964 as the "Triumph and Morgan SLR". Only one Triumph chassised SLR was made and three based on the Triumph engined Morgan +4 chassis. SLR didn't stand for "Super Light Roadster" which was my original guess, but "Sprinzel LawrenceTune Racing". The cars were designed and built by John Sprinzel and Chris Lawrence (famous for building and driving the 1962 Morgan Le Mans class winner).

Each of the four cars produced has a rich competition history and they now change hands for about £275,000. I was lucky enough to see two racing at the recent AMOC meeting at Brands Hatch.

Engine: 2138cc inline 4-cylinder, ohv, 2X45 mm Weber carburettors
Power: 156bhp@6100rpm
Transmission: 4-speed manual, rear drive
Suspension, front: independent via sliding pillars, coil springs, anti-roll bar, Koni tube shocks
Suspension, rear: live axle, leaf springs, Koni tube shocks
Brakes: 4-wheel disc
Performance: top speed 136mph, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds

It often looks like that in the UK, but on this occasion the photographer was using a graduated filter.
