Feel free to include TV shows, but I was inspired by movies for this thread.

My Top 3 Most Overrated Movies of All Time

1. Lord of the Rings (all 3)
2. Inception
3. Avatar
4. Gladiator

Edit: and if you want to give a most underrated, feel free, mine's Conan the Barbarian (1982)

The Paranormal Activity series, it's just jump scares.

And Inception and Avatar were really good movies.

yay a reply!

I've been laid up the past week with a back issue and have been watching a bit of TV, including my 2nd watches of both Avatar and Gladiator. I realize that all of the movies on my list are simple stories which rely heavily on special effects...

Well simple things can be good, it doesn't take an extravagant plotline to be a great movie.

Avatar and Inception are on opposite sides of the complexity level, but they both pull it off very well.
The reason that Avatar was so well received was because of the great CGI, we haven't seen anything like it before. Watching it in a theater or on Blu-ray just blows you away visually.

Oh, I liked all the movies I listed, but I thought they were just nice, good, easy watch movies, not mind blowing Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars like genre engendering, lasting cultural phenomena.

grabbing a couple interwebz quotes about inception:

"To class Inception on the same level as Citizen Kane is a bit comic. Wait until the “wow” wears off, then we’ll consider revising the 100 best films ever made list."

"It’s a fairly simple plot, explaining it to someone however, isn’t"

That's exactly how I felt after watching it, and why I feel it's so overrated. And that it's been done before. See Paprika, eg.

So your top three overrated movies are actually your top six overrated movies?

Your over rated movies are in fact some of my favourite movies

Might I ask why did you think they were over rated?

This thread would perhaps work better if people gave reasons and explained their choices 👍

As for me I think, to an extent, the Harry Potter franchise. Yes they are good films in their own right, however there was so much hype surrounding them that for me they sort of fail to live up to it. The acting for the most part is good, however in places it's pretty ropey, they changed some things from the books and not for the better.

Avatar was beyond overrated. I was sitting there, in the cinema, for 3 hours. By the time the film finished, I was asleep. I suffer from insomnia under regular circumstances. What does that say?

Everyone I know told me to watch "The Departed" by Martin Scorcese, said it was one of the greatest movies ever made and what not.

It's a good flick, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't blown away as the hype led me to believe I would. Plus, there were a few plot holes that left me wondering and clueless. Great casting choices, however, aside Marky Mark which just annoyed me the whole way through.

I really like LotR...

I agree with the Harry Potter being overrated argument. Not a big fan, but it's watchable.

Something else I think that's really overrated? The Last of Us. Don't get me wrong, it's got a good story and really great writing, but it's not a game really, the gameplay seemed like interactive interludes in the story itself. For all the hype of. "best game ever," and such it got, I just don't feel it.
