ok, 2 litre and a small FWD car, stock.

I don't know why you ask this, do you want to buy that car or are you just interested ? Well A Lancer Evolution for example has 4WD and 280 hp. better than 240 and FWD. But it's no compact and more expensive.

Perhaps you could explain your motivations a bit. since ... you know... you could ask because you want to buy a car. Then you should explain why you want a car like the vauxhall VXR. budget, hp, sporty handling etc.

Or you want to dfind the most powerful compact just out of interest. that changes the whole discussion.

Tell us :)

well theres that new Dodge Caliber SRT-4, but I think its a 2.4L

GM will be fitting the Solstice/Sky/GT with a 2.0L Direct-Injection Turbo I4 good for 260HP later this year, but those are obviously RWD.

...BTW: The Caliber SRT-4 does have a 2.4L 300HP Turbocharged I4

Id like to know to shut up some astra vxr owners. They think that cars gods gift to the world.

I think GM europe has spawned the SRT-4 owners of the UK with the VXR.

They claim 300hp with just a remap and new exhaust.

And that it does 8:30 around the 'ring and it can beat imprezas.

This?

2.3L though. It'll have over 250hp

Most powerful 2.0L would the Lance Evo8 FQ-400. 2.0L I4 turbocharged, 400 horses. It's 4WD though.

It has to be a new, road-legal production car then?

Yep doesnt have to be new though. Gonna check the brabus site ina minute see if they offer anything crazy for those smart four-fours.

Isnt there like a special production mini done by some company that has quite a bit of power?

Also, it may be a bit down on power stock, but the new 2.0 TFSI from the GTI is easily tuneable, as the 1.8T was. (it will be availible at 260hp stock in the 2007 S3 and TT)

And if you own an astra vxr your lifespan is greatly reduced because your like 1824 times more likely to torque-steer into a tree.

Thats another thing these fans were saying. They said that the cars that the press and media got was running on the old astra turbo chassis and therefore it had torque steer but the new ones dont have it.

Car doesnt even have a LSD they claim their runnign 300hp after a remap and they dont get torque steer. And they claim its nearly as fast as a M3 even though its wrong wheel drive.

To be honest I'm having a hard time thinking of a car thats more powerful, 2.0 litre and FWD. Infact the only car that pops into mind with more power and front wheel drive is the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, but its a 3.2 V6.

Well, you can go over 300HP without LSD and effectively no torque steer. GM did it here in the US with the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. By stuffing the new 5.3L aluminum LS4 V8 under the hood, they managed to make a 303HP, 323lb-ft sport sedan, with front wheel drive.

According to the folks who have tested it in Car and Driver, Automobile, Road and Track, and Motor Trend, torque steer is minimal, if even there at all. GM managed to accomplish that task by actually making the front wheels larger than those on the rear (Bridgestone Potenza RE050As, 255/45-18 front, 225/50-18 rear). Pontiac said their goal was to be able to chase down the BMW 330il, and although it does it to some extent, it is still limited by the FWD setup.

...So, this leads me to my question... Are the front tires on the VXR bigger on the front than on the back?

Well, not all of them are FWD, but the Astra VXR is ranked at #119 here... (look for the Opel Astra OPC)

Ranking based on specific output, limited to engines of capacity 2000cc or less...

There are some concepts and ultra-low-volume sportscars on there, yes, but definitely plenty of production cars ahead of the VXR. Maybe you can find something that can be used as "ammunition," so to speak. ;)

NAh who cares if the car has FWD ? I fa Astra owner is so üproud of his car and what not, then other things are important : Do I get a car with the same hp / hp-weight ratio for about the same amount of money ? Also don't forget the fact that, track performance and handling are not always proportional to power.

So we have 19k pounds = 30 k EUR

Ok, so we have for example the Subaru Impreza WRX . Only 230 hp and more weight, but : faster in rain, on gravel, on snow, in corners, in acceleration.
Maybe even faster overall. And it has more space ;)

the Golf R32 could also be a good match aswell as maybe a Mazda RX8. ANd of course the Elise ;)

I have admit defeat to the Astra VXR boys. However I told them the only reason why vauxhall have the most powerful 2, litre FWD car is because they were the only company dumb enough to make such a powerful wrong wheel drive car.

We had a giggle about that and some other vxr owners actually signed up and join the discussion who were alright so I like them now.

The Seat Leon Cupra R has 220hp from its 1.8, meaning it has a higher specific output (123.5hp/litre compared to 118.6). The John Cooper Works MINI Cooper S has 210hp from just 1.6 litres too. I'm sure there's another tuner MINI with 250hp...

In the Top Gear tuned Mini comparison, they featured one from a company named BBR which had 280hp. Hammond didn't like it at all, since it was just too much power going to the front wheels, which made the car very difficult to drive.

As far as I'm concerned, there will never be a truly good fwd car with over 250hp. FWD only works on cars with small sub 250hp engines. Small engines (preferably an I4) work since they minimize the negative effects on weight distribution, and the sub 250hp figure since anything higher, and the car becomes utter hell to drive while exiting a corner.

As for those people who think a VXR is as fast as an M3 or an Imprezza....

And even if the VXR was faster, the M3 and the Imprezza would be much, much more fun to drive.

The only 2.0 I can think of is the s2000 back before they put in the 2.2.

Whoa famine=mod? Spring break is pulling me away from gtp too much.

Actually, I think it just happened, like, yesterday or something. Scaff is a mod now, too.

Well, it seems you've already sorted it out, but as some of us have pointed out, there are plenty of cars with higher specific outputs. :)
