I was amazed when I first saw this on another message board. The scale of this is just amazing. The crankshaft alone weighs 600,000 lbs. That's as much as 200 Mazda RX8s. It's supposedly the most powerful diesel engine ever made. It's manufactured for marine use. The company that manufactures this produces anywhere from 6 to 14 cylinder versions. Here are some specifications for the 14 cylinder version:

total engine weight: 2,300 tons
length: 89'
height: 44'
maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm
maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm
bore: 38"
stroke: 98"
total displacment: 25,498,304 cc (1,556,002 ci)

& yes, it's also turbocharged!

That'll be Daewoo, I presume?

Incidentally, 4.3hp/litre sucks.

First question: is it used in ships? If not what?

Second question: fuel economy?

1. Of course it's used in ships you turd  Name anything else, apart from a building, that has room for one of these ;) (Hyundai Accent ?....)

2. Not good I assume ;)

wärtsilä-sulzer, a suomi/swiss cooperation. and it uses 50% of the fuel's energy, instead of only 30% that a 100hp/litre car engine uses.

Well I don't know. Super sized submarines.

Oh, yeah, they're nuclear now aren't they.

I wish there was a picture of the Turbo charger...

Me too. I would imagine that it's the size of a small house.
BTW, why was my thread moved to Cars in General? This isn't exactly car related. Seriously, you can tell just by looking at that massive thing.

So it's 23 times less efficient in terms of power/litre, but 60% more efficient in terms of fuel efficiency? And one presumes this is a turbocharged 100hp/litre car, otherwise the comparison is even dumber.

2300% less efficient in one aspect against 60% more efficient in another. Hmmm.

But , the peak power is just 102 rpm, which is 7843% lower than a say 100hp/litre engine producing its peak power at 8000rpm.

Sweet Jesus and I was expecting to see a TDI or something...or at least a semi or something. I want to see the turbo on that thing...I bet it sucks a lot .

Quote from a website:

"Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.

For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at it's most efficient power setting it consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour."

Here's a website about the engine:

I think Famine expects a container ship to have a 600cc V twin.

Been in one. And a Destroyer. I KNOW what to expect.

It was - get this - a joke... Sheesh.

whats your point?

you have ernough space on a countainer ship, yet saving 2/5 of fuel at a consumption rate of 1,660 gallons per hour should save you a lot of money.

WOW! O.O That seems like it would move the entire world if you atach it to it!!

That thing running at 600RPM should already be scary as hell.... imagine even higher than that...

TsLeng
How much power do you need to start 1 of those?

No Idea, I would LMAO if it was started with a key just like a normal car :D

1 bsp. which is: one Brake Squirrel Power.

All you need is an energetic squirrel and some nuts.

Where's that banghead smiley when you need it?

i think the more impoartant thing is has this engine been blueprinted?

and do the ships owners know that if they stick a TYPE R sticker on it, it will get a 20%hp boost?

I am aware Hyundai also produce engines like this (aswell as the ships). The Car company is not related to them anymore though.

would a series of keys diminish your laughter? that's most likely how they're started.

i mean, the captain doesn't need to solve the mysteries of the universe to start his boat up.
