Motorsports Olympics: Interesting or Dumb as Crap?

With the Olympics almost over, this topic is actually the brain child of what Dave Despain brought up on "WindTunnel with Dave Despain" here in the States and Canada. One caller had the notion of mentioning something to do with synchronized freestyle with monster trucks (imagine that!). But if you ask me, I think any real motorsport olympics already is available. To us Americans, it's called the Valvoline Runoffs, whereas many different classes of SCCA competitors race around Mid-Ohio. And come rain or shine, a world of competitors can come out and race their hearts out for the top prize, a gold medal in your honor. You might consider the Michelin Race of Champions in the Canary Islands to be sort of a Motorsport Olympics. You gather together champions and have them represent their countries. You race on tarmac that goes to dirt that goes back to road. But in your opinion, if ever there was a Motorsport Olympics, what would have to be considered to make it successful? I'll start.

A motorsport olympics will have to incorporate a certain race track to cater to a world-class crowd. Perhaps you need one with multiple configurations (crucial, if you ask me), and there has to be enough excitement to consider drivers and cars as being stars, not just the driver. So here are some weird ideas I had for a Motorsport Olympics:

Kart Racing (from less powerful all the way up to Superkarts), Rally match racing, (weirdest ideas) rally long jumps including a rally '"triple jump," open-wheel formula race cars, GT racing, sportscar racing, drag racing, and a big finale: 12 or 24 hour endurance race.

If a Motorsports Olympics were made, what would you want it to be? If not, why do you think there should NOT be an Olympics for motorsport? Fire away.
 
It would be cool as maybe I would be able to see it on public TV. :)

But I think that all the racing series are enough to show the best racers.
 
I believe you have to indroduce a spec car, a spec tire, no sponsership, let the teams do anything to the aero, suspension, gears etc. You have to think of it more of a team sport where the engineers have to do what they can with what they've got.

I can't really think of any other ideas at the moment.
 
A tug of war, long jump, high jump, swimming, Boxing, and diving could all be incorporated into the olympics!
 
nice....." Ron Fellows in the Caddillac CTS-V race car coasts to the end of the dive platform........revs the motor slightly...opens the hood, trunk, and all four doors, smokes his tires and drives off backwards,.....oh my the splash on that dive emptied to pool...a perfect 10!!!!!!! "
 
Sorry John, but BBC's TopGear kinda beat you to it. They have already done a cars long jump, darts, sprint and had a Lotus Exige play can and mouse with an Apache :D.

It would be cool to have a motorsports olympics, but I can see the novelty soon wearing off. Would we see Nitrous as a banned substance?
 
Here's another weird idea: synchronized drifting! No, not NASCAR drifting. There's another word for that, and that's "beatin' and bangin'." It can also be called "TROUBLE!" and "tradin' paint."

But synchronized drifting. Is this idea a winner? Hey, "Wind Tunnel" had Samuel Hubinette's WILD Dodge Viper drifter earlier tonight, so imagine three "teammates" drifting with him in identically-prepared Dodge Vipers!
 
i reakon that all nations wanting to compete get EXACTLY THE SAME CAR. they cant change aero or anything except for suspension settings, no sponsorship, and maximum of 2 cars per team. say they all get a toyota corolla. they are all the same. imagine Mark Webber, Michael schumacher, alex tagliani, justin Wilson, Rubens barrichello, Paul Tracy, A.j Allmendinger, scott dixon, Marcos Ambrose, Alex Yoong, Kimi Raikkonen etc, etc representing their country and racing for GOLD!!!!!! but, should it be a race, or a time trial....
 
C'mon these should also be a drafting competition with IROC-style cars.

I guess to clarify the difference between drifting and drafting, I sometimes confuse the two, but I'll tell you the best way I can remember.

DRIFTING = the act of sliding out the car. The front wheels acquire more traction than the rear wheels, thus incuding oversteer.

DRAFTING = during a race, when race cars are speeding down the track, there is turbulence from the leading car and a trailing car. When that turbulance pulls in the trailing car, the trailing car will get a burst of speed and be sucked into a vacuum from the leading car. If drafting is successful, then by the time the trailing car tries to overtake the leading car, the trailing car will blast out ahead of the leading car. This is otherwise known as the "slingshot effect."

Oh, to end this post, "Wind Tunnel" shown off pictures of that sweet, drfiting Dodge Viper in SCCA Formula Drift. But when someone made an E-Mail talking about drifting elsewhere, I think the E-mail said:

"If you want drifting, go to a non-winged sprint car race on dirt."

Man, I tell you. Some American race fans just want to take credit for EVERYTHING. Anyhow, you have any more talk about this? Go right ahead.
