xbox is a joke
Finally bought my own place and I was thinking of building me a racing rig to clear up some of the free space around here but I've never built anything like this before.
I'm only going to do a single screen + PS3 connection (for now atleast ;) ) and I was just wondering if any of you guys have a build/plan that I could use to see what all materials I need to buy and etc.

thanks a lot guys!

There are several DIY rigs you can do.

PVC, Wood, Aluminum 80/20 are all options. along with others. Do you have a budget in mind?

Do you have anything at all? PS3, wheel, seat, existing stand?

Made mine out of galvanized pipe, theres all sorts of different ways to skin a cat. Next project is going to be finding a damaged chassis from an open wheel series and making a cockpit.

My budget is around $200 but I already have the PS3, racing games, and a logitech G25. My buddy owns a junk yard so I can definitely get a nice seat for very cheap.

but yeah I'm down for a PVC, Wood, and Aluminum.. but what is a 80/20 mean?

Haha looks sweet, but how stable is the steering part?? I'm wanting 0% wobble on mine haha.
but yeah I'm probably not going to do something super serious like adding a whole dashboard and etc :P

My setup cost about $200. I use a Fanatec Wheelstand and a car-seat-on-a-base for my "rig" and I like it alot. It's modular, and it's fairly compact (without the triple monitor rig) so when I need it to go away or if I just want to set it up in front of the big screen for some Daytona or something I can. My setup is all built from 2x4's, so it's sturdy too. :)

80/20 means aluminum extrusion and its expensive. So it will probably be above your budget of $200.
GranStand
sells an 80/20 wheel stand for $225, their complete 80/20 rig is $425.
But they also sell an 80/20 seat base for $65. You can mount a real car seat on it.

A wheelstand with car seat on a base is a great way to get started without spending a lot of cash.
That's what I used for a couple of years until I built the rig I have now.
Easy to stow away when not in use too.

It was slightly wobbly until I mounted this heavy duty wratcheting anchor you see on the left, now its rock solid. I also put a screw through every fitting so theres no chance of any backing out or causing slop. Its really tight!

EDIT: the finish is actually shinny, the camera flash just caught the spray painted Zinc compound weird for some reason

I used this blueprint to build my custom Zalem rig, it is very sturdy and adjustable. Cost me very little to build. If you weld or know a welder you are set.

Hmmm that looks great but I don't know how to welde and I don't think I know anyone who does welding :(
I think I'm gonna stick with wood for now.

edit: honestly I think I might just do this.. I like the way this thing looks and I think it would look great in my room. and apparently it's nice & cheap too! http://www.ricmotech.com/store/diy_chassis_plans/rs1_diy_sim_racing_cockpit_plans
