Moving between save files problem

Right I've cocked up my B spec somewhat. Basically the story goes like this. I started the Le Mans 24 Hour race on A Spec a few weeks ago then I heard about a B spec championship so I loaded my last backup before I entered the 24hr race and got my Bob in an up arrow state and put him online.

Now after a few more saves of progression I first loaded my backup that I done before the race and it shows my Bob as offline which of course is wrong as he's been online for weeks doing races in the B spec championship. So then I loaded my most recent save 9 hours into the race and cancelled the race but my Bob is still showing as offline...

I've tried resetting network cache and setting him online to offline but whatever I do my copy on the PS3 doesn't match the server copy...

Thinking about it I guess I needed to load a save after I'd done my little bit of tweaking getting Bob's arrow up with my backup save before I started the 24 hour race. Problem is I never backed that up thinking it wasn't important. BAH!

Is my theory correct in that I'm screwed or can I remedy the problem somehow?
 
The online status of your Bobs is tied to your save game, not to the servers. In other words, what's in your save determines which Bobs you've got online. There are certain glitches which make this less straight forward, but what that means, in simple terms, is that if you have a Bob offline, store save, let's call it save 1, then put the Bob online, play the game, and eventually go back to save 1, everything goes back to the state it was in at save 1. Your Bob will be offline, and everything you had accumulated after save 1 will be lost.

Great explanation thanks. It is safe to use that Bob now though isn't it?
