Never, EVER work for a moving company. I just quit my job at AMJ Cambell (Canada only, i think...) because their business practices are horrible.
oh, and a note, I was in commercial moving. (offices, warehouses ect)
As a worker on friday, I worked a 15.5 hour day. That is a long time, but would have been fine had a couple things not happened (or should I say happened.) Firstly I recieved 4 breaks in that day inlcuding lunch. This is also fine, but three of those breaks were during the first half of the day! (ie8-12) Another thing, is I didn't recieve a PENNY of overtime!
This is what happened. I was sent to a location for the first 7 hours of the day. This was great and our supervisor wasn't an ass. We got plenty of breaks for the work we did and everything was good. About at the time my shift usually ends, the supervisor comes up to me and says that I MUST go over to another site to help them finish up. She said that it would be a maximum 2 hour job.
If you have done the map you realise that this is not the case... 8.5 hrs later. I realise that if you work a split shift you don't recieve overtime, because they are considered two different days essentially. But usually, you recieve a couple hours off in between. My break in between constituted a 2 minute (literally, we moved about 3 offices down) truck ride.
The guy I then worked with (that has been an employee for 20 odd years) decided that he wanted to come to work after the night before breaking two of his ribs. So, we got one break in eight and a half hours.
This is the kicker, that finally caused me to quit: Had I worked one shift, I would NOT have been paid full overtime anyway! Apparently, the company has a policy that you arn't paid any overtime over 5 hours a month, and the rest is "banked" untill there is a month that you do not recieve enough hours, when it will be placed in as regular hours.
So at 10.00 an hour I lost out on 35 dollars for the night.
Then on saturday, I worked again. I had planned that I would quit after saturday's shift, and I wasn't working past 5:00. So after my shift on saturady, (which I had adiquite breaks ect) I was again told that I was going to work with the asshole from saturday night. She was greatly supprised when I told her that I wasn't going to work it. Since I was a whole couple miles away from my house at the time, I wasn't worried about being hung out to dry, so I said that I was walking home, and she could find someone else.
Fortunately, I had made good friends with one of the drivers (who actually almost has his PHD ironically) who was willing to drop me off at my house on his way to the other job.
The only good thing that I got out of the whole thing (besides money really) was that the driver basically has a machine shop in his garage, and when approached about a joint super seven project was willing.
So you may see an online writeup about a super seven buildup!
