Moving speed? or speed meter speed?

I did a search and can't find the answer.

Does anyone know the speed shown on screen is the real moving speed of your car, or the speed meter "speed" which is just a calculation of the rotating speed of tires times the gear ratio of the gear box just like a real car?

I ask this because when you drift, I see the "speed" shown on screen is pretty low but I can feel that my car is moving fast. Is it really moving fast or that's just a false impression?

I wish they had it the other way around though, at least in the cockpit view have the speedometer moving according to your tire speed.

That means even I feel that I am very fast, but actually it's not. Hm.. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the meter when I drift rather than to feel I am fast or not.

Thanks,

IRL different cars handle this same thing differently. I wonder if GT5 has this properly modeled... For example, a vintage VW gets the speedo reading from the front wheel, so even if you're managing to get wheel-spin, the speedo show you the actual speed of the vehicle. On the other hand, most vintage GM products took the speedo reading directly off the transmission. Thus once you started getting wheel-spin the speedo would register an incorrect vehicle speed. I haven't really thought about that much in GT4/5, but it would indeed be very cool if each car behaved in-game in a way which accurately portrays that car's real life behavior.

while i was drifting my RWD 94 yota pickup out in the snow, you can easily tell the speed shown is the wheel spin.... obviously
