mp4-19

McLaren will decide on Wednesday if the MP4/18 is going to take part in the British Grand Prix or not.

If Adrian Newey's new car is not able to pass this evaluation test, it is possible that the MP4/18's career in F1 will be extremely short since Ron Dennis already announced that the MP4/19 will arrive before the end of this season...

"There will be two MP4/18's on the circuit this Wednesday at Barcelona for a final test that will tell us if it is ready for the British Grand Prix," said Ron Dennis. "During the previous private testing sessions, we had some problems but nothing too serious. As far as the MP4/19 is concerned, it will be ready to go on a circuit before the end of this season."

Ron Dennis is not saying more about this situation but it makes everyone wonder if the MP4/18 going to have a true F1 career or if it is going to stay only for a few races. It will probably be more clear once McLaren is able to evaluate the true potential of the MP4/18.

The Mp4-19?! I may be out of date, but this is news to me. Why would they spend millions devloping one car which would only be used maybe 3-4 races and then spend millions more developing another car at the same time? I mean, how much better developed can the MP4-19 be than the MP4-18?

I also think Mclaren should be rushing to get the Mp4-18 out as soon as possible. The MP4-17 is still competitive, but they are laging behind the other big names.

Curious thought that - particularly since they haven't designated the 19 as an 18B, which implies it's a full new car. Maybe there's an evolution of the engine that the 18 can't take - it's all a bit odd. I'm starting to think we won't see the 18 ever race.

There's no way that there could be an MP4-19 ready to go before the end of the season. They're already overstretched running the -17D and the -18A concurrently, there's no chance that they could be developing and building another new car at this stage (don't forget, it takes upwards of 9 months to design and build an F1 car).

Besides, they don't have any meaningful data from the -18A yet, and the lessons learned from the -17D would be being applied to the -18A.

I don't buy it.

Unless, as Vat_Man says there's a new, incompatible, engine on the horizon. But then the current 90-degree Ilmor engine is still really only in the middle of its development cycle, so I can't really see that one either.

If the latest testing times at Brcelona are anything to go by, then there is a lot to be improved, I know that they may stil be working on a good setup when everyone else has a decent one, but 2 secs off the pace is bad for any car.

Apart from Minardi. If they were ever that quick Paul Stoddart would then be saying that they would be ready to compete for the championship by the next race :D ;) :p .

Testing times don't mean anything. Really.

Unless you know exactly what the team you're monitoring was doing respective to everyone else, the times mean squat.

exactly, there is no idea on what they could be doing, tyre testing, new aero bits etc you couldnt possibly have a clue as to what they where running
As GG said "Testing times mean squat"
