Just thought I'd inform you guys there is a virus going round on msn. I've had 2 messages so far from people that I don't even speak to anymore (just too lazy to remove them) with messages like "LOL, This picture is so old" and "Hey is it ok to add this picture to my new slideshow" both accompanied by a file called img003.zip (or something like that) and both 20kb. And there is no way either of these people could have a picture of me also from what I know about them they wouldn't have a clue of how to put a picture into a .zip file or why they would put a single picture in a zip file.

Hope this was the right section to post this.

It isn't a new one. i've fixed a pc a couple of months ago which was infected by something similar. It also tricked you to open a file claiming it was a picture of you.

That happend to me. My virus software wouldn't remove it, only quarentine it. I'm not making that mistake again.

Most of my contacts don't even know what a zip file is, and those that do aren't stupid enough to message me like that. I hope...

Hang on, aren't files sent over MSN scanned before they reach the recipient? It does it pretty forcefully, too - it won't let you have the file unless you scan it. I'm sure they are, in fact, because it used to drive me mad at how long it'd take.

I really hate these MSN viruses. Why can't MSN protect us from viruses. So far only MSN is giving everybody problems. Not Yahoo Messenger nor even AIM. Geez, i wish MSN really solves this problem. It really annoys me when they start to send you crap and expects you to opened it.

Oh yeah, does anyone also know the pict004.zip virus (or something like that) where suddenly your friend ask you to opened it. I think this virus is related the the one above....

A while ago I awkwardly got the "check out this picture of you and me!" right after having a conversation about photos with someone. :ouch:

You can thank the devil in a sweater-vest for that.

I love how people blame Bill Gates for viruses. Silly Apple people.

Things like this have been going around for ages. I got a notice about a picture of me and someone several months ago and saw it was .zip

At that point I notified them they had a virus and closed the window. General rule of thumb is you don't download anything from a friend when they just random IM you about it, and second rule if it is just a simple jpg, you should scan it right off the bat for a virus.

A huge reason viruses proliferate is the users don't educate themselves about them at all...

I don't open anything liek that straight off unless I'm obviousley expecting a photo, but usually there's some conversation before that happens.

You must not have been using AIM in 2002 then. AIM was far worse.

If anyone gets an email saying

Hey! I worked really hard on this, check it out and comment

or similar, don't open it. It will make you log back in [to Gmail, at least] and delete all your emails [for Gmail, at least]. Mine opened in a new window, so I closed it, but my cousin got totally screwed over...

Yup. Only got AIM this year :indiff:.....(because Stunt Drifter ask me to use it so it will transfer files more faster and safer or that was what he was saying......) Well as for the virus is easy, just don't open it. If you accidentally did open it, then just do a scan for the virus or reformat your PC (like most of my friend does....)

Any decent virus scanner will stop it anyway. I accidentally downloaded it once and as soon as it completed my scanner (Norton) gave me a message and deleted it straight away.
