As mentioned in my previous post, I'm **finally** making the transition to MT. Any hints? I'm doing the usual business of downshifting in the turns, upshifting at the redlines, but I figure there's prolly some more subtleties or tricks than just that.

So far, the only big difference I notice is that MT allows you to keep the car from downshifting into the lower gears where your wheels spin out (S-8 being the big example that comes to mind).

once you switch you will notice that you can take corners faster and if you tune your gears properly you can blitz the AI racers and its much more fun for doing doughnuts in free mode

I'm sure others have sound advice but here's how I do it...

When you get in a car take a moment to look at the spec sheet and note the rpm at which you have maximum power and maximum torque. Maximum power does not always come at the redline. When upshifting you'll get the most power to ground if you delay shifting until a little after (500-1000 rpm) the peak power rpm*. This will also have the advantage of putting you higher in the power band when you do change gear.

You'll want to avoid, if at all possible, getting below the peak torque rpm. In many cases you should never be any where near it.

Downshifting is more complicated. Before maneuvering for the corner I want to know what gear I am going to exit the corner in. During braking I downshift to one gear above that. Just before turn in I downshift to the gear I want to exit in. I stay in the same gear through the turn.

I think this is one of the principle advantages of MT: the ability to control the gear shift points during cornering so as to keep the suspension and weight loading stable.

* Yes, I do know that the power starts to decrease after the max power rpm. But it doesn't just end. There's a balance between where the drop off becomes too great and where upshifting will place you in the power curve. That balance varies by car, tune and gear settings.

Many thanks. This is exactly the type of stuff I need to know.

before you take your car out, find out where the peak horsepower is. shift accordingly to where it is to keep the rpms right near the max horsepower. now for some cars, that means taking it right to the rev limiter, while others, it is 2000 rpm before the redline

listen to the whine of the engine and shift when its the loudest thats how i do it in all my games, its second nature with any car after a while. ive never used AT so i dont know what benifets from it
