Noticing this problem in the Auto News section more than any others. A thread will be started that is a good title however anyone who may be searching news on the said topic will not find it and create a new thread. An example is the recent XJ220 thread. Browsing thread titles it is easy to miss that the topic has been covered.

Maybe it would be better if instead of having witty titles for new threads that new threads have a set thread title format like the year, make, model of the car (eg. 2011 Ferrari 458 italia)

Thanks
John

I think its more of an issue that the person starting the second thread needs to look over the first page more. Its no different than in the GT forums for the questions that get asked repeatedly. Chances are the original thread will be on the first page still.

However I do think we need a reminder to post page/post numbers for updates on mega-threads.

Sometimes though the thread titles are so obscure that skimming over the thread titles for the first 2 pages still can lead to multiple threads. Another example I have is this thread before it had SLS AMG added at the end of it.

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=126617

I nearly posted another thread about the same car where I in no way could have deciphered from the thread title "Um, ahh, err, DROOL..." what the car in question was. I happened to click on the thread hence I knew what it was about. If the thread titles at least had some key words in them to start with they'd be much easier to spot.

Sounds like a good idea, but I think such a rule/suggestion would be hard to enforce. Probably wouldnt work very well in practice is what Im trying to say here...

I remember looking for a thread on the Aston Martin One-77.

The thread was called "£1million Aston Martin", and I had missed it.
So I opened another thread that a mod closed immediatly. I still find my thread first searching on the forum, to then use the link of the mod to got the correct thread, which now has a better name.

Enforcement would be the issue. I think it really comes down to common sense on the part of the thread starters. You'd be amazed how many threads we get with completely useless/generic titles like "Question" or "This would be cool" with no further information to attract viewers.

Boring thread titles are boring. Most stuff that is duplicated in the Auto News section is done within a couple days (at the most) of one another. So really you could search for maybe 20 seconds and see if something is posted.

I tend to think that the Auto thread has developed its own artistic licence and this doesnt seem to be a happening much on the rest of the site. So I think there should be an exception for that particular area because the interesting titles are a nice element which adds character.

If it really is a problem you could have your interesting title followed by a more informative explanantion in brackets.

Robin.

Yeah but for example the SLS GT3 had nothing about the car at all in the title so other threads were made. Thankfully the first thread had it's title changed.
