Filtering through the national news rounds at the moment, it's been revealed that the greatest commentator in the sport of all time has been diagnosed with early stage lymphatic system cancer and will be undergoing chemotherapy.

Only last year we lost the voice of darts, Sid Waddell to cancer and now the voice of F1 is fighting cancer.


Who else was bought up on Murray & Fleetwood Mac?

Sad to hear, I am worried about Murray with his advancing years.
 
That is sad news - I do hope that the treatment works.

I too grew up on The Chain and those dulcet Murray tones '...and there he goes!' :)
 
Walker is the epitome of a good commentator.

I can't link because I'm on my phone but Murray said in a statement that they caught the cancer at a very early stage. So he and the doctors are very hopeful he will pull through.
 
Catch it early enough nowadays and survivability is very good.

Ohh man, I really hope he pulls through, It'd be sad to see such an interesting and iconic character go this way :(
 
He's old, so I don't know how many more years he has in him even if he gets cured but I hope gets better.

Doesn't matter anyway, his voice will always play in my head every time I remember an old F1 race. Also he's the only Brit with big enough cojones to say Michael Schumacher's the greatest driver ever, and not Senna.

Murray's eighty nine and with an (At best) uncommon form of Cancer. It's not like Bowel or Breast Cancer that's been massively researched & tested with newer, better drugs.

I don't want it to sound a like a death sentence, but the odds are against him to be honest.

Nah, Lymphoma is plenty common. My mum was diagnosed with it about 4 years ago, and again they'd caught it early enough. Problem is it never really goes away completely, so she's has to be vigilant for any signs of cancer anywhere else. She's in her late 60's and was told it would eventually kill her, but the chances are she'll have died of something else long before.

As for Murray, I was never a fan - it used to bug the hell out of me when he get so excited and start making mistakes. I also met him at Silverstone a few years ago and he was a bit of a miserable git, if you didn't buy his book he wasn't interested. Of the other commentators I've met... Tony Jardine, John Hindhaugh and Martin Haven were all much friendlier.

To be fair, he's not well-known in America, unless you really follow the sport. I'd hadn't heard of him until I'd been following the sport for about ten years (although that's when interwebs, PSX, and F1 wes available to me).

Well that's not news you want to hear. I came into the Motorsport to check for race weekend threads. I alway forget which weekends are as are not race weekends. Not a nice thing to find. Been affected close with cancer, doesn't just hurt the person with cancer but hurts the whole family and all their friends. With Murray walker he has a lot of friends. Millions even. Best of luck to him to pull through.

Apparently the news isn't so bad.
They caught it early on. In fact he apparently doesn't even need chemo.
 
That's great news.

I imagine he commentated the cancer out of his body. :lol:
