Music at work!

Alrighty - got a bit of a dilemma here and I need some suggestions! I've started a new job in an engineering workshop and at the moment I'm getting bored while operating machinery. Now the other guys around the workshop listen to music. Problem being because I'm always moving around the workshop to different machinery I'm not at one machine all day like the others so I can't have a stereo plugged into a power point and I probably wont be near a power point at times either.

So being the computer savvy person I am I immediately thought of a laptop. Hard drive = own mp3 collection, battery = no need for powerpoint but that also raises the charging problem too. A laptop won't survive long in a workshop because of hot swarf, hot machinery, oil and on and on.

So then once again I thought of a little media box. Custom made case, M-ATX motherboard, up-spec sound card, incorporated PSONE LCD screen, incorporated speakers etc etc. Once again need a power source. Also need a mouse and a keyboard which once again wont last very long.

Anybody else got some more ideas? I thought about a simple 256/512mb mp3 player and hook it up to a small stereo but then I would need to find a stereo with aux inputs.

Any help would be appreciated! 👍

Why not just get a iPod or something similar. If your operating machinery the music coming from speakers will drowned out by the background noise.

I guess so he can hear if someone wants him, or something.

Another idea:

You would actually be surprised that not much of it gets drowned out..

iPod or similar. Hm, got_speakers? ;) That isn't too bad of an idea, I would just like something in one whole unit much like the things Burnout posted.

You may also look at CD/MP3 Boomboxs. You know, CDRs full of MP3s.

forget iPod - iRiver and Creative is where it's at ;)
Just get yourself a good set of speakers and you'll be set 👍.

Those XM radio things are also cool, but expensive and there's the monthley fee to worry about. The Wireless radio thing from D-Link is cool, but I dont the speakers are loud enough

I agree with you.

I don't much care for the iPod, when in comparison with the other HD based portable MP3 players. However, the general concept is good.

As far as the d-link is concerned, yes, I do agree, the speakers look a little small, the Xm Radio would probably work out, of course, there is a monthly fee.

I personally think your best bet is to find a nice CD/MP3 Boombox. JVC has a nice one.

I forgot what the name was but it was a USB flash drive that had a head phone connecter for it. It had 512mb memory.
a couple companies have them actually. The problem with headphones though is that he's in an environment with a lot of machines. It's very dangerous to wear headphones since you can't hear what's going on around you ;)

Oakley Thump. 256 meg, mp3 playin' sunglasses. And they're a steal at only $500.

Also, is there any need for conversing while you work? Where I am (desk job), headphones aren't much of an option.

Yes and no really. As someone said earlier I'm working in a machine shop so headphones are a no-no. I bought myself a little cd/radio player for the time being but I want something mp3 capable...

An mp3 boombox would be perfect but there's nothing like that in NZ I don't think..

It shouldn't be too hard to find. Most of Sony's new products all handle MP3. Same with most of the products by the major electronics companies 👍
