Ok, I dont want anybody saying how they feel on the issue, blah blah, all I want is an answer. (BTW, I though i'd get a better response here, rather than in the music forum.)

Now to the question,

How many of you watched the 'MTV Icon: Aerosmith hoopla?

Well, I happened to record the show, and I decided that I was gonna "try" to get the audio off the tape, and onto my computer, in mp3 form.

Using my simple hookup of the RCA plugs into a headphone jack, I ran the audio cable from the audio out on my VCR to the line in on my sound card. To my surprise it work, but with crappy quality.

So i just did it again, but rather than going through my VCR, i ran directly from the audio out on my TV, to my computer, with much better results (now if i could only get the fade out to work:))

The real question,

Is what I did legal? Or at the expense of answering my question, does it fall under that "no unauthorized reproduction" speech at the beginnning (if there was one)?

This was the only way I could think of that i could get this music, since i'm pretty sure that it wont be released on a CD or something.

The way I see it, anything that is broadcast on TV, is kinda like public domain. We pay for it, and in some cases, we don't, to me that says, hey do anything you want with it, as long as its for yourself. If they didnt wasnt us to do this, they shouldnt have put any input output on TV's:)

Anyways, you thoughts on the subject (if you can understand a work of what i'm saying:))

well, this should be interesting, lol

I would say it would be illegal. Recording a tape off the radio is illegal, noone really cares, but its still illegal. Most stations, usually have a copywrite after there broadcast. nascar has theres after it, so if you record it, you cant sell it. BUT, your not selling that. I beleive that it is ok to record thing off tv, if your using it for your own personaly use, not to redistribute it to make money. So if you just took the music off there to listen on your home pc while surfing and stuff, then im sure thats completly legal, but noone really would care i dont think, lol.

The radio stations pay for a mechanical license, which allows them to play the music while paying the artist a royalty fee to air their music for public enjoyment.

It what you did illegal? Certainly!!! Go turn yourself in, imediately, you criminal!

In all actuallity, my understanding of the law is: as long as you don't reproduce to "Sell" it as a product, or claim it as your own to sell, then you would not be in violation of the law.

Pako, I agree with what you said, except when you called me a criminal :( :( ;) :p :D

The truth hurts don't it? :D

I think that the law covers sale and distribution Btw.... But IMO, I think it's perfectly fine. whats the difference between recording it onto your VCR tape/Tivo Versus a PC's Hard Drive? Minus the video no less.... Aerosmith should be happy that people still want to hear their music, as most of them are probably eligible for social Security.

Dang that fourth one. "THIS ISN'T A POLL" ALL THE WAY!!!! WHO'S WITH ME???

Nice avatar, 'Tom McDonnell'. That is gold.

Aerosmith's still goin' good. Yeah, they're old--who isn't?
