Well, finally found an album I like in DVD Audio/DTS/5.1 format - REM'S Automatic for the People.

Wow.....stereo sounds like a $5 piece of crap transistor radio after hearing that in surround. I've never heard such clear projection of instruments.
 
I have that same disc. But I listen to it in stereo. DVD-Audio generally presents a better separated mix anyway. I took exception to the placement of some instruments (strings in the rear, etc. )

Do you have a DVDA player, or do you listen in Dolby Digital/DTS?
 
Dolby Digital/DTS - the hell of being an early adopter.

I have heard Natalie Merchant's album in DVDA and was frankly astonished - it's on the list for the replacement...
 
No kidding - it makes the CD (which was a pretty good recording) sound like a 78. That's been left in the oven. I suspect there was some "re-mastering" - some of the songs are a little too different for something as small as a format change.

I'd suggest waiting for a DVD-A/SACD combo player now. They're starting to creep down in price. Plus, I am a DVD-A owner with SACD library envy....
 
Allow me to recommend Eagles' Hell Freezes over... Have it on LD with DTS and it is absolutely Beautiful...

LaserDisc? Good God man...you're only twenty years behind. ;)

I have heard that concert in DTS on DVD before. It is excellent, except for the instrument placement (what is it with recording engineers putting instruments behind you?). I have Hotel California on DVD-A - also an excellent remastering. 24/192, baby. \m/
 
I thought CD's were 5 channels? Or are they only 2? I know their quality isn't anywhere near as good as DVD-Audio, but I thought they still had 5 channels.... Think 7channel DVD-Audio will ever come out? Not that I'll need it any time soon... My dad's sound systems are still only 2 channels and 4 channels... But his 30yo reciever still sounds amazingly well for its age, and for some reason, one of his records(a Beatles album) sounds good, and it's a record, as in vynle....
 
CDs are by and large two channel. There are a few DTS CDs that use 5.1 sound, but they need a DTS decoder so you'd most likely play them in a DVD player anyway.

Seven channel? Maybe. Not any time soon, definitely. There are some seven-channel capable receivers, but there's no such thing as commercially available discrete seven channel sound. The receiver interpolates (guesses) the sixth and seventh channels from the surround channel information. Also, you have to bear in mind that many people can barely fit five speakers in their living situation.... :)

I like my Laserdiscs. All 250. As well as my vinyl albums (around 1750 ) Anybody remember those ? :D
 
I've got Depeche Mode's "One Night in Paris", which is a DVD-V. I often play it on the computer with the view window minimised. It pretty much rocks.

What "compact" formats ?... You mean like casette tapes ? instead of 8 tracks ?
 
My dad still has plenty of vinyl records... He doesn't listen to them any more. Instead, he's into downloading MP3's, and he yells at me for using up too much bandwidth....

I prefer to actually have CD's rather than MP3s... I need a job...

I wonder if Ikea has a larger scheme or a plan for world domination. We've got the same towers (only two though...)

They're multi-use gizmo's. They only go away when you use them for their second purpose: Frisbee's:D
