Muted Engine Sound in Cockpit View

What's going on here? I'm only at level 12 and just own 4 premium cars but when I compete in races using the cockpit view I can barely hear the engine. And it's even worse using the bumper cam view. In that view you hear nothing. It's so bad that in cockpit view I bump into redline all to often b/c I can't hear the engine.

Now I realize that from the front bumper you won't hear much, but you should at least hear a car's intake. And in the cockpit view you can't hear hardly anything, but if you look behind you (from in the cockpit) then you can hear the engine more. What in the world?

I find myself racing mostly from the rear overhead shot b/c the car sounds the best from this view. Is there any way to get around this problem and adjust the sound? I've already tinkered with the audio settings and it hasn't made any difference as far as I can tell.:nervous:

I have the same issue, only with my headphones, and can be fixed by taking the 30 min menu ride to the options to change the sound from 5.1 DD to 2.0 stereo.

It's like a real car. Unless the interior has been gutted, with a loud exhaust equipped, you aren't going to hear much.

I completely agree with Wolfpack. The in-car engine sound, which obviously needs to be at a lower level than driving outside, is simply far too low. The issue is accentuated when you have a pack of cars around you making it very difficult to to hear your engine revs.
There needs to be an ability in the sound menu to separately adjust your cars volume level and the opposition cars volume level.
Something like what Forza 3 has.👍
It would be nice to be able to appreciate the cars engine noise while driving behind the wheel.
Hopefully this is something that can be patched as unfortunately it does detract from the otherwise fantastic driving experience.:)

I don't understand it, I really wish PD would give us good individual sliders for audio control instead of just SFX and music.

Would love to see separate categories for bumper, cockpit, roof and chase cam with options in each to adjust engine volume, exhaust volume, music volume, tire noise, opponent sfx and environment sfx (rumble strips, crashing etc).

I agree that it should not be as loud as exterior views but it is ridiculously muted. LFA at 10K RPM I can't really hear, on top of that weight reduced cars aren't any louder in the cockpit/bumper views.

I also noticed that the bumper/cockpit views sound mostly the same.

I disagree. It's way too quiet. I've tracked stock vehicles before and it is not that quiet within the cockpit when you're running full throttle almost constantly. I have a very hard time believing I could drive a 1976 Ferrari 512BB and bounce off the rev limiter without noticing the sound of the engine. Additionally, if that's the way PD wants it why is it when I press the L1 button (using the standard controller) to check my rear view that the exhaust sound is louder? I'm still in the car, nothing changed.

It's ridiculous.

Chadspeed thanks for the tip, I'm only using my TV speakers so I'll give that a shot.👍

I noticed some improvement when I switched the sound setting to 2.0 stereo for use with my headphones also. Still, cockpit sound is too quiet for my taste.

I have some questions for you guys complaining about muted cockpit sounds:

1. Did you notice that the driver in the game is wearing a full-face helmet?
2. Have you ever raced a car while wearing a full-face SA-rated helmet?

Trust me, you can barely hear anything, which is why I have a shiftlight in my real-world race car, which happens to be quite loud.

1. Yes
2. Yes

And YES you can hear the engine, if you're driving the right car. Muffled maybe, but muted? No.

In GT5 it seems to affect only the Italian Cars, at least for me. For instance the Chrome Line LP640 which should scream so loud my ears bleed doesn't make a peep unless I'm using the chase cam and then it's only the exhaust I hear.

Don't make excuses for PD's horrible QC, no one here needs to apologize for them.

Should a game decide whether of not I want to hear it, or should I make that decision my self? PD simulating the sound with a helmet on, very possible but not likely. FM3 does the sound very well, especially in Cockpit view, you can hear motor exhaust, and other cars are overly boosted in their sound in GT5. I can't believe that the stock Miata the A.I. is driving is louder than my Camaro, especially since I'm inside my car and his Miata is roaring behind me and about 50 yards away. This GT5 Disappointments list is way too big.👎

Wolfpack, I had the same symptoms. No engine sound from my own car unless I'm in the external view.

I did the same as what Chadspeed suggested and that fixed the problem for me.

My PS3 is plugged into the TV using HDMI. Not sure if the problem was specific to my brother's Samsung LCD TV using the built-in TV speakers. For some reason, it wasn't converting or auto-detecting the 5.1 to 2.0 correctly. I had to forcefully disable 5.1 in the PS3 sound settings.

Guys, thanks for your advice. My PS3 is plugged in directly to my TV via HDMI and following Chadspeed's advice and switching the audio was just the ticket.

All the engine noise inside the cockpit that my heart desires! This would lead me to believe that anyone having issues with this just needs to tinker with their audio settings.

I've the same issue, but the strange things are two, 1) this problem is with not all cars, with my civic type r i can hear well the engine, with my nissan 350 Z i barely can hear something; 2)if inside the car i must hear lower WHY I CAN HEAR LOUD THE OTHERS ENGINES??? This is NOSENSE!!!! :grumpy: Sometimes i change gear in the wrong RPM section beacause i confuse my mind with others sound!!!

Silversky, this is because a majority of engine sounds in cockpit view/bumper cam for the cars will come from the center channel. For some cars, there is also additional engine sound coming from the side channels as well. I tested this theory on multiple cars when my sound was not working correctly.

Changing from 5.1 to 2.0 fixed this for me. All engine sound will be converted and output to the L+R channels.

Thereby removing any Surround Sound benefits, not an acceptable work-around but it'll have to do for now... hopefully a fix is in the works, among many others.
