WTF happened to www.mxtabs.net ?

It seems that it was swallowed by its parent company. Where can I find all of those MX tabs? MX was the best, clearest and most organized tab archive around, and now they killed it?!!? Man am I ever pissed. Now I have to put up with retarded Ultimate-guitar, which is a hopeless, completely unorganized, cluttered, over-sold (ad-wise) pile of junk.

Pffffft.

Anyone know of any other decent tab sites? Don't be a moron and say "just learn to play it by ear."

Do any of the artists care if people want to play their music? That's just plain ol' retarded.
Of course not. The RIAA never do anything the artist want or care about.

Well, its actually the MPA leading the charge against tab sites (that's Music Publishers' Assosciation, not the one leading the charge against video piracy). But I presume most of the companies in the MPA are also affiliated with the RIAA.

These ass-faced corporate jack-asses really don't realize how they are the complete scum of society, do they? Man, I bet they feel so happy when they drive home from their offices in their S430s with the 6-digit paychecks and telling their wife and kids how tough a day it was. So many phonecalls eh? I bet 99% of these jerks aren't musicians, if they were, they'd realise what they are doing is killing the industry.

I place these people next to crack-whores in the social ladder. Man, I wish I would meet one.

Hey, I used to buy a tab book every now and then for an album that I liked. Forget that, I'll never ever do it again. I hope these RIAA/MPA get pissed off, 'cause I know that the musicians won't.

----

Learn one chord, play punk and make millions.
Learn two chords, play rock and make millions.
Learn three chords, play jazz and starve to death.
but
Work for the RIAA, make millions and piss off every musician in the world.

Except perhaps Metallica. But we know what kind of people they are...

They don't consider music art, just an income. And they will guard their income with as many lawsuits as required. I don't how they can sleep at night when all they do all day is "Oh! Our sales are dropping, who can we sue?".

BBC Article
"Unauthorised use of lyrics and tablature deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living, and is no different than stealing,"

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed. He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal".
****ing jerkoff.

No artist in the world cares if people tab their songs.

If I ever run into this jackass on the street, I'm going to hit him over the head with my guitar.

My brother gave me a good idea when I talked to him about this.

To get back at 'em, I'll take the low-road and just download a whole lot of songs right now.

But what bothers me is how mildly illegal it is. If I were to listen to someone speak, and write it down, it's now considered illegal? Even if he didn't want to sell transcriptions of what he said?

I'wve got a heavy-ass Fender bass you could use to beat him with. And then I'll buy some super tick guage drumsticks and give him a good smacking with those. This is intolerable.

"Deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living"

Hah! A lot of the bands I listen don't even sell official sheet music. So, I don't see how they're losing any money with me getting a tab. And a lot of the bands I listen to put the lyrics up on their website anyway, so again, how are they losing money?

Idiocy.

That's a good point. Also, most user-submitted tabs aren't 100% accurate anyway, but rather how that person hears and plays the song. Is it also illegal to trade MP3's of covers that your band has done? If not, this is a double-standard.

I'm a moderator over there at the mxtabs forums (here if you don't believe me), and mxtabs.net is down indefinitely due to the legal threat from the MPA. If this whole thing goes away then I'm sure it'll be put back up.

But yeah it does suck that the owner removed mxtabs, I really don't like UG and half their tabs are stolen from other tab sites like mxtabs.

Only if they copyright it. And in this day, I wouldn't be surprised if people started trying to copyright their speeches. :P

Tony Robbins really should get his rehashed motivational speeches copyrighted.

Well thanks for the good tab site while it existed. Not only do most artists have lyrics on their sites, I've seen some who even post tabs on their sites. Omgosh.

Sorry, I had to...

Wow that complete bull ****. How the hell does it deprive the artists if we learn tabs from someone who wrote them down from ear or from a book they BOUGHT.

It doesn't deprive the artists in any way, sillies. It deprives the MPA. They're shutting things down and suing because tab sites take away their sales as publishers. The point when the mass-print publishing companies can't sell what they've printed has nothing to do with the artist, whom has already signed the contracts and has been paid in full by the publishers.

Stupid greedy publishers, though. Save a tree, write a tab. :P

These slobs need to be controlled. I think they have stepped over the "control freak" line.. actually, they did a long time ago. And I miss MX Tabs.. I used to visit it daily. I miss it.. badly. other tab sites are sooo freakin hard to navigate.

this deserves a sad face...

:(

I've always used Ultimate Guitar. I despise it but I wasn't aware of a better one. That really sucks.

When will people learn?

Same here. I would've gone searchin for a better site if I actually searched for tabs on a regular basis but I don't.

Ultimate guitar would be a great site if it weren't for the fact you get 20 adds popping up evertime you click on somethin.

What bothers me the most about ultimate-guitar is that you have all of the artist for, say, the letter O in one section, but you have to go through the pages one by one, aiming for the suspected alphabetical rank, eventually finding it, then repeat the process over again for the song tab! But wait, it doesn't stop there. You also gotta chose between the different "kinds" of tab for each song.

With MX, there was a rankable band list on one page, click the band, click the song, oh theres a good tab, click the tab, print. Done. No BS.

Now, selfish corporate jackasses are milking all good out of the "art" called music.

Uh, just use the search function to find artist/song x?

That's what I was goin to say. There's a search function just above the alphabet thing. And it makes sense to have different types of tabs as the bass one are different from the guitar ones.

I know this is kind of old but I think this has spread quite a bit further. While looking for Avenged Sevenfold tabs, I found that quite a few sites have pulled themselves down, even Ultimate-Guitar wasn't working for me and one of them came up with a note about the stuff discussed here. It said something about only tabs to un-copyrighted bands are allowed.

Damnit, now I can't find the tabs I want.

MX Tabs
An Open Letter

7 years ago, Mxtabs was started as a hobby drum tab site by a young musician attempting to learn drums. Gradually, guitar and bass tabs were added as well for the other musicians in his band to use. Over time, the site gradually grew in popularity to the state it was at 2 months ago, before its voluntary closure.

The entire purpose of Mxtabs was to aid musicians in learning their instruments. Simple guitar, bass, and drum tabs, even if inaccurate, are invaluable in helping people to learn the rudiments of their instrument. In no way was the site designed to circumvent copyrights, in fact, Mxtabs has linked to Sheetmusicplus from its inception, asking users to buy the official sheet music (when available). By December 2005, Mxtabs accounted for over $3000 in sheet music sales monthly, via affiliate links to Sheet Music Plus.

We believe that tabs are ear-transcribed interpretations, used for scholarship and research only. They are not meant to replace sheet music, rather, they serve an entirely different function. Most musicians can not read sheet music or musical notation, and require collections of rudimentary songs to learn the instrument. These methods are almost impossible to access through the current sheet music situation. Additionally, only the most popular artists have sheet music published, leaving lovers of indie genres, for example, unable to find any sheet music for the bands they love. As a result, Mxtabs does not view itself as harmful to the sheet music industry. If anything, Mxtabs increases the numbers of musicians learning to play their instruments, which will translate into sheet music sales as they reach the next level.

It was with shock, therefore, to see the BBC article asking that tab site owners be jailed. To our knowledge, tabs had never been decided as illegal material by any court ruling, and Mxtabs did not believe that it was operating illegally. Nevertheless, the site shut down as a sign of good will. Although we view the MPA demands as extreme and find it completely misleading to say that we are trying to "rob the bank", we recognize that there is some clash between the sheet music industry and tablature.

Therefore, Mxtabs would like to make an open plea to sheet music companies to offer tab licensing. It seems better to actively work with the existing market, than by seeking to destroy it entirely. Tabs are spread by the thousands across the web, and have not reduced in number in the last 2 months since the threats were made. Mxtabs would be willing to work with sheet music publishers to create a situation advantageous to us both.

Please contact mxtabslicensing@ yahoo.com with any proposals or information you might have.

LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Good to see MX Tabs tell those greedy pigs to **** off. Sheet music and "official" tabs are VERY VERY scarce, when you consider the number of bands out there today. To suggest that tabbing robs them of money is ludicrous.

On the subject of tabs, this is the clearly the best tab EVER
I give it points for not wasting space. The notes are all there, and in the correct order. Oh, you want to know the harmony and meter, too? Pffft. n00b. :)
