My 360 died, should I get another one or buy PS3 instead?

I'm not sure if it's the right place to ask since you are Gran Turismo oriented players (so am I then maybe it's not that bad idea). But let's start at the beginning.

My 4-years-old Xbox 360 has died recently. It is out of warrananty and I decided not to repair it (I was offered 50 euros repair costs plus 3 months warranty).

The question is: should I get another 360 or buy PS3 instead? I can afford only one gaming system. I'd definitely go with PS3 if there were no strings attached. But there are.

I own like 8-10 xbox games that I could resell (unfortunately for silly amount of money). Problem is that I enjoy some of them. To be precise GTA IV, Guitar Hero with a wireless guitar and Forza 3. So even if I sold them, I'd buy them again for PS3.

With GT5 instead of Forza 3 of course. But that's a totally different story. I played every Gran Turismo from 1 to 4... heck, I still own PSX with a copy of GT2. So yeah, I love the series. But then comes money issue.

Let's say I bought a new 360. It means I keep the games and sell the dead xbox. In this case total cost is about 225 euros.

But if I choose PS3 the situation looks like that: I sell the dead xbox, sell the games for a small percentage of what I paid for them and buy Guitar Hero, GTA and Gran Turismo 5. Total cost: 350 euros.

In both cases I own a gaming system with a decent racing game (no point in arguing about which one is better, I know it's GT5, ok?), Guitar Hero and GTA IV.

So the basic question is: is GT5 worth 125 euro of extra money? Or even more if I'm unlucky with reselling my xbox games?

P.S. The amounts of money I used are accurate to where I live. No point in discussing them.

Couple of questions you could ask yourself

1. Do you play online ? ps3 could save you money long term there.
2. Which system has the most exclusive games you like (halo/forza/gears vs uncharted/granturismo/littlebigplanet etc)
3. Which system do your friends have?
4. Do you like to watch movies (bluray) ?

Hope this helps. 👍:)

i personally dont think games like guitar hero last.. for instance, i played rock band 2 for a long time, and after a while it was simply drawn off from peripherals. i'm deep down a guy who loves playing video games using the simple standard wing controller.

While that doesn't answer your question directly, you could be saving some money if you didn't buy another guitar set, because guitar hero's trade in value now is very low.

I think you made up your own mind already.
Your making up excuses to buy a PS3. Otherwise you had the X-box repaired by now :) .

Good choice!!!

Do I? It's out of warranty and I really can't see a point of paying 25% of the price of new one just to have it repaired and working for what, 3 months? From what I've read those after-warranty repairs won't make xbox live forever.

And for 4 times the repair price I can have a brand new one 360 (so-called slim) with 2 or 3 yrs of warranty.

Yeah the extra money for the blu-ray is well worth it. At least the ps3's don't cost an much as four years ago. I remember when mine cost me $500 and that was without the games!:scared:

Even though I now have two computers with blu-ray drives....and I built them myself....

Well, didn't mean to offend you.

As for that said. A new X-box won´t last forever either. It´s crap like you say it yourself.
So why bother buying a new X.box if you lost faith in it.

The lowered price of both systems is surely a big plus. That's why it's so easy to buy a new one instead of repairing. Still, I remember buying my xbox for a smiliar amount of money years ago, those were times...

Anyway, I always thought it's obvious to buy PS3 after Xbox brokes down. New system = nex exclusives. But when it happened to me, it suddenly isn't that obvious.

Well, didn't mean to offend you.
No offence taken! I appreciate your comment :)

If only it was true I wouldn't have much of a problem right now. Throughout the years MS really did improve its gaming system. I'm not afraid of another RROD. If today's xbox was the same I own, I wouldn't hesitate to buy PS3. But things have changed (took them years but finally 360 is now what it was supposed to be at launch day).

PS3 has a wide range of different games. From motorstorm to gran turismo, from little big planet to killzone, from psn puzzle games to infamous, from eyepet to singstar.

Its a whole new world ;)

Just think it as god's intervention telling you to buy a PS3 and play GT5. You know that you want to play it. ;)

Though now on topic, you could buy either PS3 or Xbox but only if you are willing to invest on a new and different system. You could also consider the ability to change the hard drive in the PS3 a feature and from what I know you can't just take your old 360's hard drive and put it into the Slim 360.

from what I know you can't just take your old 360's hard drive and put it into the Slim 360.

This way it's not possible. But you simply transfer your games and saves via USB stick and then transfer DRM licenses online. Pretty easy if you ask me.

But question remains. Is Gran Turismo 5 worth extra money? I know it's not out yet but... is any game worth additional 125 euros to its competitor (Forza 3 in that case). A lot of money for me but also... a lot of game GT5 is ;)

Yeah, maybe my xbox broke down for a reason... 💡

GT5 will have 1000+ cars, weather, karting, a track editor, day/night transitions and a bunch of other features that Froza 3 doesn't have...I'd say, if any game is worth $60 US, GT5's the game.

In my case GT5 would be worth the extra money. I´ve been looking out for this game a few years now.

But that´s for you to decide for yourself.

EDIT - Buy a PS3 and only GT5. You don´t need the other games, cause GT5 will never leave your PS3 anymore.

if you are a hardcore racing fan/enthusiast and are willing to spend the money on a nice wheel, i would say the PS3, Gt5 and a good wheel will be worth it. Otherwise the 360 is a very good console (despite the old ones red-ringing, the new 360 systems are supposed to be a big improvement). If you are true to racing, ps3, otherwise the xbox360 should suit your needs. Forza 3 is a great game, but it will not touch gt5. I own both systems, and if i had to give up one, it would be the xbox360, but i'm a hardcore GT fan so my opinion is biased towards that. Although i will admit the xbox live experience is worlds above the playstation network if you have friends or a group of people you play with. :)

I have already invested $350 on a fanatec GT3RS wheel myself and main reason why I bought my PS3 was to play GT5. Though now the reason I still own a PS3 is because it has the games I want to play and it's very convenient to go from playing a video game to watching a movie and to browsing the web(Though I don't do that anymore...).

You wont be paying an extra 125 for GT5 if you buy a PS3 bundled with GT5. Also, GH and GTA4 are both really cheap now.

Being a PS3 owner, obviously I am going to say get a PS3, but you should get one anyway, for a number of reasons.
GT5, primarily. Come November I am confident we will see a new standard in driving games, one that is exclusive to Sony's console.
And PS3 has better exclusives than the 360. God Of War III, GT5, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, Resistance, Infamous, LBP.
Seriously, you'd be mad not to.

I have both

If i had to pick between them i'd say Xbox 360 - it has a greater online community, Xbox Live is still miles ahead of PSN

Problem is right now GT5 is coming out so i couldnt not have my PS3 for that !

Most of my friends are on xbox live and i have four close friends who have both systems and they are the same as me - they just use the PS3 as a blu ray player and 360 for games.

i have both.

i would go for the PS3.

And get your games GTA,... also used so it will also come cheaper as your sold xbox games does.

Or stick with the games and let repair the xbox for 50 bucks when you got the money. but with GT you will barely touch your xbox.

Also Forza can not even touch GT. Plus on the ps3 you got a good range of wheels to get (DTGT, Fana. Carrera,...) for a reasonible price.

people always come with the Xbox live and dashboard argument. But i prefer the XMB to the Xbox dashboard. And PSN is free of charge and Xbox live isn't. You can buy a game a year for the price of Live. Or get PSN+ and get a free game every month!

Xbox is great but is nowhere near the PS3 (my 2 pennies, whoo-hoo making friends again ;) :D)

on the other side, ask this question in a FM forum an all will tell you to get a Xbox

GTA on PS3 doesnt have the extra DLC like the 360 has

Do not agree with this - both have stregnths and weaknesses - No one has played GT5 yet to be able to tell if its a Forza killer

People? anyway....

Its not about if it looks pretty - its about the functionality - i can easily see my friends - what they are playing and join in at the touch of a button.

I can chat to 7 friends all playing different games at any time - organise a game to play or whatever.

Apart from Blu Ray and Internet browser I havent seen anything the PS3 can do that the 360 cant.

PSN has played catch up to XBL since day one - adding features and content that XBL had on launch day on 360.

I agree on this lol

At the end of the day I love my PS3 and i'm ever hopefull they will add some chat features like XBL and that when GT5 comes it will make the PS3 stand out but all i've seen so far is 'meh'.

Yes it has. I have both stories on one disc

Forza doesn't have 1:1 900° steering and has buffer in the steering (but i still like forza for what it is )

LoL That beeing the argument i was talking about, i can live without it, some don't, so it's up to the people and their preferences

i agree with you there, except for a lot of features on Xbox you need Live, on ps you have them for free. As i haven't live i never seen an advantage, but there sure are some. And a BR-player and games on Br are a must for next gen. Hate changing discs ;). Web browser you can watch vids for free, and an standard HDD come also to my mind

It comes all to personal taste. And having a PC, most of the Xbox "exclusive" aren't that exclusive anymore. But those which are exclusive are great. But i don't won't to break down a war here.
I like my xbox and the exclusive games on it.
But i love my PS ;)

That PS3+GT5 bundle sounds pretty good. I think I'll order one as soon as it's available where I live.

About the exclusives. Having played GoW, Fable and Halo it seems a better idea to try what PS3 has to offer instead of playing GoW n+1, Fable n+1 etc. I mean there are changes and improvements but the basic idea stays the same. I enjoyed those games but come on... there was hardly any racing ;)

I'm glad I asked here. Everywhere else people wouldn't understand the importance of Gran Turismo series.

So I'll basically sell whatever leftovers I have of xbox 360 and order PS3.

Thanks for all replies. They were very helpful
