Last weeked we had a pretty bad storm with lots of lightning. Sunday afternoon I got on the computer and noticed I had been signed out of all my IM services. Then I saw that my DSL modem was off. I switched it off then back on. Nothing. Checked the outlet and it was plugged in. So it was fried. All of the lights that were supposed to be lit on the router were on, so I thought nothing of it. Luckily I had a gateway so I disconnected the router and modem and hooked it up. I had internet again on my PC, but it wouldn't do anything for the 360. After spending hours changing network settings on both the gateway and X360, I called my friend over to help. After again spending several hours trying to get it to work, we decided it was the 360. Everything works fine on it though besides the ethernet port. It will even connect with the wireless adapter (yes, I ran to Wal Mart and spent $100 just to test it...and return it the next day :P ).

So yesterday my mom called Microsoft (I can't stand talking to people on help lines considering you can't understand 99% of them...) and they kept running her in circles and putting her on hold for two hours. Absolutely no progress. They kept returning to the phone and asking what the problem was. She would tell them the network card got hit by lightning, then she was told to hold again. They would come back, and the same would happen. They would not even give us the address to return the thing. Finally she gave the phone to me, I told somebody else (who actually sounded like English may have been their first language or they had learned it because they wanted to learn it, not because they were taught whenever Microsoft hired them...) and I told her that my router, modem, and allegedly my 360's ethernet port had been hit by lightning and they do not work. I also said that it did not work on a LAN (didn't actually test, but saying that would avoid a bunch of troubleshooting with router settings and such). Within fifteen minutes I was talking to a hardware tech who told me that I would receive a box within four days with prepaid shipping both ways. I provide my own packaging materials besides the box they provide and I only have to put the console in (they actually told me to take off the HDD). Once they receive it they will have it repaired within two days and up to four days later I will have it back.

I'm not sure whether I should be complaining about their customer service or saying it was pretty good. After all, my mom was on there for two hours with no progress besides them having out address and such.

I about forgot the best part. I bought my 360 in March and did not get the extended warranty. He told me that according to their records I am still under warranty and that this will cost me nothing. However, the manual says that they don't even cover power surge damage under warranty.

Lucky? :sly:

Sure - very lucky.

We've had a bad experience with Microsoft recently. Let me explain:

When we first got the console back at release date, we decided to to get an extended 3-year warranty for the console because we knew it may have some problems, and didn't want to pay out for repairs when the standard warranty runs out. Dad sent in the form that came with the 360 to extend the warranty to a Microsoft unit in Havant, about 15 miles away from here. A few weeks later - no response. Dad wrung Microsoft up, waited 10 minutes before someone spoke to him, then said what's what. They said could Dad send another letter to them explaining about what he wanted. Dad done that, waited a month or so this time - no response. Dad wrung them up again - waited much longer this time - explaining everything that has happened. This time they said they would contact him back when they can. Waited a month - no contact. He wrung them AGAIN, this time a little more harshely. They AGAIN said they would ring back - they didn't. My Dad was almost thinking about sending a complaint in about this, but just before he did he noticed something had just come through the post saying that we are now covered.

What a load of hassle that was, especially if something were to go wrong if the standard warranty ran out...

Too bad you really can't do anything about their service. I'm sure somebody would get a good laugh at the Bettter Business Bureau if you reported Microsoft.
