Hi All,

I've been stalking the GT Planet forums for about a year now and I visit most days to see what's happening. Recently I have been working on a side project; a gaming news website.

Introducing Spunwicked : http://www.spunwicked.co.uk

This is a labor of love and hard work and I would really value your thoughts and opinions, any improvements that could be made? Maybe you write game reviews and want somewhere to showcase your literary talent, if so, get in touch with me :sly:

What is quite lame is the comments fields for most posts are empty, this will not do! Feel free to litter the site with comments :dopey:

I'm not sure what the terms are for posting links here at GTP or recruiting writers so, moderators, if I stepped on any toes then please accept my apologies - I thought the Rumble Strip would be a good place to make this post. If it violates anything, please delete, delete, delete :D

Technically you can't advertise your site here, but I've moved this to the correct forum where you can get feedback on the design/content etc.

Wow, I love the look of it. Very professional. Not sure I like the forums though. Any possibility of a different forum software? Something like SMF, or VB?

I see what you are saying about the Forums, I may upgrade them to PHPBB at some point, but for now, I think a reskin would have to do.

The forums are linked into the the article comments system, so if an article is posted, a new thread is automatically created. If a user comments in the thread it is shown on the article page under the comments section.

I will take a good look at the Forums over the next few days.

Hi Guys,

Just thought it was time for a quick update on how things are going with my gaming news website, Spunwicked.

Since launch about 7 weeks ago, things have been steadily getting better for the site, currently getting around 400 visits a day - good times.

One thing I haven't managed to nail yet is a community, still bare forums and comments are sparse. I suppose it's a waiting game though and can't be rushed, eventually Spunwicked's forums will be bustling with activity.

Do any fellow GTP'ers have any tips on how I can speed this process up or is it just a case of wait and see?
 
Being that facebook has a large fanbase, maybe throwing an advertisement there or something would help.
 
Facebook can be very hit and miss - my advertising budget is non-existent. I have experimented with PPC with mixed results, my conclusion is that it is just not worth spending on it.

I am getting a really good flow of organic traffic and would like to turn some of my visitors into members. Thinking back, I visited GTP for about a year before I signed up to post. I guess some things just can't be rushed.
 
I know you likely need the ads for revenue, but for me they are a big turnoff. Same as any site i'm on, so never put ads on my sites even though it costs me over $150 a year to keep them online.

Only other constructive/personal criticism i have from a quick looksee is the logo is too small and 'normal' (i.e. need a distictive logo, even though its quite hard to be unique these days!) and i'm not sure the greyish bars work well for me.

But yeah, my opinion of course. :)

Yeah, ads are a big pain, but the site has to pay for itself. I reduced the logo size, made the site a bit more bland than it was previously and my adsense earnings have multiplied instantly.

The original logo had a lot more flair, I had some abstract graphic design on the header and page background. But it was rubbish for conversions like that. Unfortunately, to make enough to cover its hosting fees, it has to have ads. Fair enough really.
