i drove for the first time today... i loved it.
we were downtown today sanding the rust off my dad's friend's cutlass and re-bondo-ing it, and he let me drive it around the block a few times, my dad came along.
well, it was definetly interesting, and very fun! its an 86 Cutlass supreme sedan, 231 CI of MAX V6 POWA. i got in the car, got my crap together, and started 'er up. it was a little difficult at first because the key is weird, you have to fiddle with it, and push really hard, but i didn't want to break it. i finally got it started and put it in gear. when i first got going i gave it too much gas, but i quickly got a feel for the gas and the brakes, and we were rollin'. the first turn up the alley was weird, because it was my first turn ever and the steering on this car is really dead, there is alot of play and no feel whatsoever, but i did good, and i was going straight up the alley in no time. i basically glided up the alley with the occasional gas or brake, and the next turn into the exiting alley was a breeze, though i came close to the corner of a building, i was fine. the next corner back onto the road took a little thought. i had to turn passed a parked car on my right, while this dude in a van wanted to turn in the alley i was exiting, but i squeezed through, and gave it a bit of gas down the street just for fun. 110hp may seem slow, but this car has the torque to back it up, i just had to touch the gas, it was basically power on command. i started off in an alley previously, but this time i had to park on the street, which meant driving in reverse (with that little notchback window). i parked like 4 inches from the curb, and 4 inches from the car behind me, i got my dad to correct it.
i went for another drive through another alley, then back down the same street. it was the opposite alley, and this time i had to make all left turns, i like them better in this car, tight rights aren't fun in a cutlass. i had to park again, this time i had two car lengths space, with a van infront and the same DSM that was behind me before, this time i pulled it off, with a little concentration and help, but i did it, a perfect park job.
so overall it was a good experience in a car i liked, even though the steering was tricky due to the lack of feeling, it's the kind of car i like, comfortable, and semi fast. i'm definetly looking at a cutlass supreme for a first car (or any other G body, but i would prefer a cutlass).
