i drove for the first time today... i loved it.

we were downtown today sanding the rust off my dad's friend's cutlass and re-bondo-ing it, and he let me drive it around the block a few times, my dad came along.

well, it was definetly interesting, and very fun! its an 86 Cutlass supreme sedan, 231 CI of MAX V6 POWA. i got in the car, got my crap together, and started 'er up. it was a little difficult at first because the key is weird, you have to fiddle with it, and push really hard, but i didn't want to break it. i finally got it started and put it in gear. when i first got going i gave it too much gas, but i quickly got a feel for the gas and the brakes, and we were rollin'. the first turn up the alley was weird, because it was my first turn ever and the steering on this car is really dead, there is alot of play and no feel whatsoever, but i did good, and i was going straight up the alley in no time. i basically glided up the alley with the occasional gas or brake, and the next turn into the exiting alley was a breeze, though i came close to the corner of a building, i was fine. the next corner back onto the road took a little thought. i had to turn passed a parked car on my right, while this dude in a van wanted to turn in the alley i was exiting, but i squeezed through, and gave it a bit of gas down the street just for fun. 110hp may seem slow, but this car has the torque to back it up, i just had to touch the gas, it was basically power on command. i started off in an alley previously, but this time i had to park on the street, which meant driving in reverse (with that little notchback window). i parked like 4 inches from the curb, and 4 inches from the car behind me, i got my dad to correct it.

i went for another drive through another alley, then back down the same street. it was the opposite alley, and this time i had to make all left turns, i like them better in this car, tight rights aren't fun in a cutlass. i had to park again, this time i had two car lengths space, with a van infront and the same DSM that was behind me before, this time i pulled it off, with a little concentration and help, but i did it, a perfect park job.

so overall it was a good experience in a car i liked, even though the steering was tricky due to the lack of feeling, it's the kind of car i like, comfortable, and semi fast. i'm definetly looking at a cutlass supreme for a first car (or any other G body, but i would prefer a cutlass).

chevelle is an A body. heh. G body is 78-88 malibu/lemans/bonneville/cutlass/montecarlo/regal/gn/gnx/grand prix RWD.

one i drove was like this, but it was silver/gray, and rusty. no where near as good looking:

yeah, maybe. but cutlasses are cheap, so i'll probably end up with one. ok ones can be had from 500$-1000$ canadian. the one i posted was 4900$ though, but its a loaded brougham with a 4.4L V8, and was in storage for 10 years, a perfect example of a cutlass.

I WANT A CAR!!! :D

For a kinda on topic note. One of my buddys has a 1984 Cutlass Supreme Brougham thats in really good shape. That thing has the most comfortable seats ever.

I remember when I first took a drive. It was in my 1982 Celica and it was stick. I had a hard time at first but then I got it.

Congratulations, mayorbill! I absolutely love driving - I think that getting somewhere is half the fun. :) So, when will you be able to get your license?

First time I drove was about 7 months ago, in the 3 ofcourse.

took a bit to get use to driving...I started as a 2 foot driver, but then I started using the right foot(like you are supposed to).

Once I got the feel for it, I was rocking.

I've driven by myself around the block acouple of times...

I've also driven on the highway(went 76 in the 3 on an awsome swooping highway-to-highway ramp).

It's easy to say the least.

The only "problem" I have is brakeing for corners. It feels fine for me...I turn the wheel, the 3 turns, no noise no nothing. The 3 is really responsive, that's what I like. I've driven the MPV, and the wheel turns easier, but it's not a direct feeling...it's kinda floaty to me atleast.

I got my permit in June...the MO law states that you have to have a permit for a min of 6 months(182 days) before getting your license(which you can only get at age 16 ofcourse). You can get the permit at 15, but for some reason, I just didn't go sooner. So I get my license in December...it's not totally bad...only 2 months after my B-day...

our G1 is like the 'permit' its 8 months till you can take the G2 test, otherwise its a year.

heh, the cutlass felt VERY 'floaty'. i used my right foot, no problem.

It wasn't really a problem, I knew that you were supposed to use your right foot...I just started using both for some odd reason.

thank joe pesci for square cars, i say.

That's your fault, you shoulda been born sooner. :)

Yea Snoop I rock at parking too. right lined up between the lines every time. Then I have to precision park on our driveway just about an inch or 2 behind whatever is infront of me. My dad was gonna let me drive a '95 Millenia the other day, but he's not supposed to let me drive other people's cars without thier knowlage so ohh well. It wasn't an S so who cares?

heh, i won't be 16 for a year, but i still drove, heh.

after having driven a car i can honestly say that 16 is a good age to start driving for most people, i'm sure there are many people who could start to learn at 15, i could get my G1 now and be on the road and do fine, but i've already read the license instruction book a few times, and frankly, i probably have a better understanding of what a car actually is as opposed to most 15 year olds.

same here...I know the rules of the road, how to drive, the car I drive, all that. I coulda stated driving when I was 13...
