My first experience in a convertible (with top down)!

GTPlanet, hello again.

As my brother picked me up from school, he came in with his Sebring rental car. But rental car or not, I had a chance to enjoy what this Sebring could deliver as we headed home... with the top down! Since it was getting to be total darkness, the air was cool as we breezed by. I can imagine why convertible lovers love to let their tops down and enjoy the air and sun. But listening to music and enjoying the open air, it was fun as crap! Only thing is, I wouldn't recommend a convertible for the weather expected for Friday and Saturday here in Houston.

It was a pretty cool experience to say the most.
 
I had a chance to drive a Miata out on some backroads for a half hour or so... top down, 75 degrees and sunny, with a 7000rpm engine and lovely five speed, I don't think it really gets much better than that :)

I remember my M Roadster i had a few years ago, only rag top i ever owned. With the roof down on a lazy summers evening at about 4000rpm in 3rd gear it was the best motoring experience i ever had. Damn I miss that car :(

As for convertibles, I like them. Since my dad has a 65 mustang I've taken it out several times. I've never really put it down when it was cold though so I'm not sure about that. I think I'd rather like a good car where it has a sunroof and "one touch" down windows. :D
 
Yeah, same here... My only experiences in convertibles:

Some sort of early 80s M-Benz SL? I'm not sure ont he numbers, but it was fun. I love convertibles, adds so much more to the car. Too bad it kills my hair, I'm 6'2.

Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole. Man that was a fun ride... Beautiful b-roads, no traffic. Luckily I was too young to drive at the time... I would've had too much fun :D
 
my friends neighbor has a 96 (i think) toyota supra....he always complains that it's slow because it's a non-turbo automatic, so when he took us out for a drive (cant remeber for what) we took his dads bmw convertable. me and my friend are 16, he's 24 and is a pretty decent driver. He took us down some deserted twisty roads in NJ...it was awsome with the top down. Unfortuniatly i was stupid enough to wear a hat that day so i was holding on to it the whole time:lol: it was an awsome car..the only problem since it was a slightly older bmw the sound system was carp:D a manual convertables is the only way to go if you have the money..maybe one day if i'm lucky (and dumb enough) he will take me out on his GSXR600 that'd be the day..
 
I have yet to be in a convertible so I wouldnt know what it feels like. When your in a convertible with the top down do you get alot of noise like when you crack a window all the way down in a coupe. Also do you get that much wind to your face?

Actually it does. Try an S2000 sometime (: I drove one in 65 degree weather, top down, with a 9000RPM redline and a magnificent 6 speed transmission.

It depends on the car. Most I've riden in weren't too bad.

Wind noise: not as bad as a coupe with all the windows open. There's less car to cut through the wind and make the noise, so all you hear is the windshield and the road.

Wind in your face: It actually doesn't get in your face because of the windshield. I find that it comes from behind more because the air rushes over the windshield creating a small vacuum effect in the cockpit and the air rushes down and in from behind. Long hair tends to get blown into your face.

Some topless cars have a little screen-type panel that hinges up (behind the front row of seats) to eliminate that high/low pressure effect.

Yeah, it's pretty common in modern cars. And if the car doesn't come equipped with one I'm sure it can be had aftermarket easily. And even if that's not an option, how hard can it be to bolt a piece of plexiglass between the seats? (:

Thanks for pointing that out. To add to my previous post, most modern cars have very little wind noise or disruption. This article has information about cabin wind in the five current mid-sized roadsters.
