So I finally bought a good computer and want to buy a racing sim. I've been playing GT4 and Enthusia with my DFP since they came out but I was gettin a little tired of those so I decided it was time I step into the PC arena. I am really looking for the game with the best physics engine. What do you guys recommend?

Look no further than Live for Speed. It doesn't have licensed cars, but it has the best physics of any sim I've played, great online multiplayer, decent-looking graphics that can run smoothly on almost any computer (all you need is a processor faster than 1 GHz and a recent video card), and great DFP support.

GTP has a forum for it as well.

If you have an older computer, take a gander at Sports Car GT or Viper Racing.
Viper Racing has a somewhat better physics engine, but Sports Car GT models fuel use, tire wear and car damage better. Sports Car GT is also easier to modify to use real life tracks and cars, and it comes with real life tracks as well, in addition to more cars (and the many, many many old add-on cars for it are awesome).

I recommend Live for speed too in physics wise
you won't lose anything giving their demo a try
other alternatives are GTR2 or rFactor, you can put lots of mod
if you like rally, Richard Burns rally should not be missed
(man I miss him ... )

if you looking for some fun driving, try TOCA3 and World Racing 2 if you haven't touched them yet in PS2

Hey, dude, ignore the ones suggested above (joke)... if you're looking for truly realistic physics, look no further than Grand Prix Legends. It's physics are so realistsic, all it's reviewers took about a month and a half to post good lap times. It simulates the 1967 F1 season (which I adore) and you get a few of the drivers and their cars (I'm not sure about Jimmy Clark, but you can get a super gorgeous Lotus 49 nevertheless) and tracks ranging from Monaco to the full-length Nurburgring. It's graphics are not that good by today's standards (it's still 3D with textures though)... but it does look great and can run on nearly any computer. It's from 1998. It has such realistic damage too (I'm not sure of the visual damage because I haven't seen any shots of it.) because if you redline it too much, your engine catches fire and I'm pretty sure there may be tyre blowouts as well. To be seriously considered.

Imo go for Liveforspeed if you want to race online more than offline, go for RFactor if you don't think you'll be racing online. RFactor has tonnes of downloadable content out already, LFS doesn't, but LFS is the superior game in terms of driving physics (though I wouldn't knock RFactor, it's still very good imo) and online playability.

Infact if you google search the websites for these games you can download free demos to try, LFS even has a free online demo to see how the online races are.

Most of what I would suggest have been suggested to i will just link you to a page for each game which includes screenshots, previews, reviews, ling to official site and a demo:

GTR2: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GTR2
GTR2 simulates 2 FIA GT seasons, 2003 and 2004, it includes all circuits from both them seasons plus all variations of the circuits. It has 2003 and 2004 Spa 24 hour races in a seperate mode along with 4 other fictional 24 hour races. It also has a driving school, and 40 custom championships. At the moment there are some good mods in the pipeline, World Super GT which will include the Ferrari FXX, mclaren SLR and so on, FIA GT 2006 season and many more.

GT Legends: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GTL
GT Legends came out before GTR2, it runs a fairly simalair graphics engine and game structure. It has a large range of legendary touring and GT cars from the 60s and 70s including the Porche 911, Mini Cooper, Corvette, De Tomaso Pantera and many more. It includes 26 track variations and a whole host of championships to drive in. The career mode implements a money system so you win money after races enabling you to buy better cars. There are also a good range of mods out and ni the pipeline.

Cross Racing Championship: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/CRC
CRC is a incredibly fun game, its not very well known but it should be. It has 60 tracks across 6 different enviroments (Muddy Hungarian off road course, UK farm and woodland, French mountain roads, American beach setting, Icy Finnish forests and a large German racetrack) all of which should keep you going for a while. The game has realtime body and mechanical damage which looks stunning and has a whole host of graphical effects such as motion blur, bump mapping, dynamic reflections and so on. The game has 8 cars (Focus style, Audi Quattro style, Pajero style, Pick up, Buggy, MX5 style and Caterham style) all of which can be upgraded and customized.

NKPro (needs a good PC): http://www.bhmotorsports.com/NKPRO
NKPro is a very good simulation, although it doesnt have offline racing it has a good online racing code. It has 4 circuits, each with various layouts but more are being added all the time, Monaco and Silverstone to name a few and an italian hill climb course. It has 4 open wheel style cars the gradually get quicker, from formula ford style F1600 to F3 style Formula Target. For the first time in a racing game it has interactive cockpits, all the buttons can, and sometimes need to be pressed using the mouse. The dynamic tyre surfaces mean that not only do the tyres naturally wear creating a negative feel to the car but visually the tyes will look degraded and poor. And another feature I personally love and want in more games, is the, get out of your car thing..While sitting in the pits, with the touch of a button your out of the car and roaming around in first person view. Brilliant:D

Live For Speed: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/LFS
LFS is a constant on-going development project, so its not finished yet but that doesnt mean its not a full game, because it is, lots of tracks and cars to get to grips with, fun offline races and intense online races. There are 19 cars and 7 racing enviroments which I believe leads to around 40 track variations. There are no mods for it at the moment, and wont be any for a while, but this game has more than enough to keep most simmers happy. Oh, and it has the BMW Sauber F1 car. A lot of people on this site will recommend this game because of its physics.

Race Driver 3: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/RD3
RD3 has 70 different cars (Including Williams FW11, FW18 and FW27), over 80 circuits and variations and 35 different racing styles and 116 different championships. It has the main disciplines which are, Open Wheel, Touring cars, GT racing, Oval Racing, Historic Racing, Off Road Racing and a Honda section. There is a lot of fun to be had with a lot of the championships, V8 supercars, DTM, Williams challenge, British GT, Lawnmowers, and so on. Plus many mods are coming out, better British GT which will include the Ferraris, a BTCC mod has also just come out. The game has 2 modes, world tour like Race driver 2 (story mode) and Pro career, chose a racing type and race every championship in it, even take on multiple racing disciplines.

Race: The WTCC Game: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/RACE
Race has had a lot of criticism, but at the end of the day, its a sim, and in a lot of peoples eyes a good one at that. It simulates the 2006 WTCC championship so it has all 10 circuits from there inculding Macau, Valencia, Magny cors and Brands Hatch. 6 differen manufacturers, with 8 different models resulting in over 30 cars taking to the grid. Theres also a WTCC 1987 mode although it only has 2 cars, the M3 and Alfa 75 turbo and on top of that a Mini Challenge cup with over 30 Minis.

rFactor: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/RF
rFactor is one of my personal faviroutes, it has endless possibilitys, there are countless mods out for it including Formula 1, V8 supercars, Lawnmowers, Group B rallying, endless mods and more circuits than i care to think about! Lots of fun to be had in all the different cars and on the different tracks (F1 car on a tarmac Pikes Peak:P) Plus the online mode is great, although i didnt get a chance to tryy it, i have heard a lot about it, ETCC, megane trophy, all sound great. With lots of mods out, lots of tracks out, and only more and more to come, rFactor probably wont die ever..

Richard Burns Rally: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/RBR
RBR is a brilliant rally sim, ultra realistic feel to it. It comes with 8 rally cars, including the Impreza, Lancer, Corolla and 206 but the modding community has created more including this years WRC cars. 36 stages, some fairly long and some quick blasts but all of them feel unique and present a new challenge in all weather. The rallys represented are all official, the Pirelli international rally of Gateshead in England, the Rally of Canberra in Oz and so on. Everything in rallying is here, massive rally ending crashes, animals, birdstrikes, helicopter rescues, and of course, a rally school, where youg et taught by the late great Richard Burns himself.

Rally Trophy: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/RT
To me, RBR and Rally Trophy are like GTR and GT Legends. Rally trophy is a realistic rally game set on fictional rally stages in Finland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Kenya. It has 11 classic rally cars including the Mini, Volvo Amazon, Saab 96, alfa Giulia, Opel Kadett, Lancia Fulvia, Lancia Stratos, Cortina and Escort. A total of around 42 stages, all of which are challenging to drive. Also there are mods being made, new stages, new standalone cars including the Citroen C4! all in all basically a classic RBR.

Grand Prix 4: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GP4
GP4 is the pinnacle of F1 games in mine, and many many other peoples opinion. A realistic physics engine, realistic damage, great AI, extremely accurate circuits all contribute to the games F1 greatness. Its based on the 2001 season but the game has numerious mods out for it: 1986, 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. all with track specific liverys and driver changes. Plus many fitional and new circuits have/are being made including Istanbul and Shanghai. No online mode but the single player mode is enough to keep people going.

Grand Prix Legends: http://www.bhmotorsports.com/GPL
GPL is an extremely difficult simulation. The cars are hard to drive, the tracks are tricky, and the AI are hard to beat. But when you get used to it it is so dam fun. Again there are mods coming out for it including the 1969 season scomplete with huge wings. A massive range of tracks are out for this game including the Isle of Man TT track. Worth picking up if your a classic F1 fan.

Hope this helps..:)
