So last night when he turned on the system, the game froze, he got scan lines, and now it only makes red circles around power button. It's brand new and it can't do anything... As you might guess, he's losing his mind now. Any suggestions as to what's wrong?

Hmmmm, something like this has happened to me before, but not the scan lines. It just randomly didn't load up. We found out by ourselves that leaving the DVD in the Xbox while it was off was causing our problem, but yours sounds different.

What combination of red lights does it do when you turn it on? On Microsoft's website, there are different explanations as to what each conbination means, and they give instructions on what to do from there.

For example, this is one for "The upper-right quadrant light is the only light that does not flash red.":

Thanks for the insight, G.T.:) It's not my 360, it's a friend's. And, he can't chect the 'net right now as his computer crashed 3 days ago too. (It seems as though everything microsoft in his house has crapped out on him.)

I think it's just the power light flashing red, but I'll see if I can get a bit more info from him tomorrow, as asking for help doesn't get one far if one doesn't ask the right questions that adequately deascribe the problem.

And, it really sucks, because last weekend, I was at his house, and his Ghost Recon:Advanced Warfare disc was on in his 360, and he tilted it to try to get the faceplate off. Needless to say, he forgot that his 360 that his XBL clan bought him was on, and the dics got a big circular scratch. I told him it was no big deal, and that we could go to a place called Vintage Stock that resurfaces discs for 3 dollars. He didn't believe, until he later plugged it back in and worked. I saved him 50 dollars from having to buy a new GR:AW disc, but his Xbox still died.:ouch:

Wow, it was a VERY bad idea to do that... It does exactly what you described.

Yes, get as much information as you can, then we'll be able to help better, unless someone knows what's wrong now?

I'm having a similar problem right now actually. Mine was 5 days old (yesterday) when it first refused to start PGR3. When the game was inserted the XBox would crash and the "ring of light" would flash indicating Hardware Failure.
I rang up the helpline and they suggested I go back to the store to get a new Xbox and I did so, I got a new Xbox console and a new AV cable.
When I got home the same problem persisted along with now my wireless controller not working so I think it might be the power pack causing the problem somehow.
Tomorrow I'm going to return this Xbox and get a completely new package, new console, wiring, controller.

It's a real pain in the arse to pay NZ$720 for something then have it crap out after less than 10 hours use and the brand new replacement not work either.

That same thing happend to mine. I went ahead and took mine back to bestbuy and they offered to replace it. I ended up refusing that offer and just got a $400 gift card instead. I figure when the ps3 comes out ill buy another 360. It should "im hoping" be a little less expensive. Plus it might be a updated version with less problems.
