Can't believe it. Weeks of grind and now this.

Got to B-Spec level 40 with 5 drivers all on 40 too. Today was my second day to hit A-spec. Everything was fine but I rebooted the PS3 after a B-spec race to attach my G25 wheel. Started GT5, got through a few menus and then it froze. Nothing. Waited 30 mins still black screen. So I tried to turn the game off and the PS3 slim froze. So I hard booted the machine. Now when I try Gt5 I get An error occured during the start operation (80028F22). Needless to say I am in sulk mode for the day....

Any advice apreciated,

hopefully you had a back up. Delete file and then copy other file back. Seems like you have a corrupt saved file. Something hurt your saved data when it froze and you booted down.

Why rebooting the ps3, couldn't you just plug it in?

Also, check the save data like mentioned above...

Guys thank you all sooo much! But it's working now? I was so upset I just turned everything off. I have not read about a bug thing? And I am not sure how to backup my data. Do I need to put it on another hardrive? That would make sense.

Anyway, I still got the error but it just worked? I am now doing a B-Spec race to see if its really ok and it seems fine. I better to a backup thing. This is a warning to everyone I hope.

Thanks all

You can backup your data using the backup utility on the PS3. You need a high capacity external hard drive depending on how much space you have used on your PS3, if it is not much then a high capacity USB flash drive might do. You can also back up your game save if that is all you need. The problem with the backup utility is you can't restore copy protected saves on to another PS3 if you have any that is.

About your problem, I think it is your lens on the blu-ray drive that is on its way out or needs a clean. You will most likely experience your PS3 freezing now and again. If that is the case then it will be wise to backup fully then give Sony a call if it is under warranty.

Very kind of you to explain things. I have a DVD laser cleaner. Do you think I should use it? I hit the "SAVE" thing on the GT5 home screen but I guess that is not correct. I have a big USB external harddrive and will try and back everything up.

Again, thanks to all who responded. Take care all

Just BACK UP your save data file. Front page here:
http://www.mygranturismo.net/

"Why and how backup your GT5 save file"

Read that and do as it says. The sooner the better. All you need is a USB stick. (or 2) Do it every time you save GT5 progress and have a copy of the previous save too (a known good save)- so you don't back up a corrupted save file. That is the most important thing, not backing up entire PS3, because you can't do that often enough.

Cant find the thread I posted the other day but this is an update anyway.

My PS3 died yesterday for real. But I found a local PS3 repair shop and took my machine there to be fixed while I wait. it was very interesting. First they found the lens was dead. So they swapped the whole DVD rom and put in a new one for £84. They then gave me a letter to send to the company I brought the device from (Amazon) where I should get a full refund for the work done. So cool!

Anyway, they had around 20 engineers working on just PS3s. All engineers and very pro. Now check this. They all advised me NOT to play any games for more then 6 hrs or the ROM will die again!

So that's that. No more days of B spec for me. I sugest you all take a little more care of your machines. I wipped my harddrive and not sure if I can get my game data back. I did do a games data backup on a USB stick but no idea how to put it back. So maybe I lost my cars? We will see.

Hope this helps others who are grinding.

Take care all

All working now! I am soooo happy!

Thanks to all who tried to help. I have all my cars and progress on a clean installed machine. Nothing but GT5 here.

Have fun and take care all

Where was that shop??
I don't buy the 6 hr limit.. my PS3 has a problem first recognizing BluRay Discs that are movies, but reads games first time every time. It's a little over a year old, 120GB slim.. upgraded to 500GB 7200rpm. I think I need a cleaning disc that blows air on the laser lense because there's a little dust on there. - but I don't see how playing a game for over 6 hrs hurts the DVD rom..

Any advice apreciated,

Avoid turning off your PS3. If you can still access the PS button, its better to exit and then off from the main menu rather than to off the PS3 altogether. My game just froze yesterday and this morning but I off my PS3 using those methods and my GT5 thankfully is still running without the save being corrupted. :)

The thing is, I think if you off the PS3 from the main switch when the game is still running it will corrupt the data/save even though you aren't really saving anything. Just my advice here... 👍

Also sorry to hear about your PS3 man. :(

The are called PS-Pro (PS-Pro.co.uk I think) Just do a web search. Pretty amazing what they do. Just PS3 repairs. They even have several oven type things they put the inside of your PS3 into but no idea why. They are all qualified EEs and print a full report on any work done to your machine. You can even stay and watch as they do the work. Lines of work benches and every EE was working away and a mile of machines waiting to be fixed.

Believe what you want. These guys are making a small fortune from this kind of attitude. They were also telling me about an epidemic of green light thing? Or was it red light? Anyway, there are TWO seriouse problems with PS3 hardware and we need to be a little careful like back up data and not over stress the machine. But for £25 they do a 2 year repair guarentee so any problems they fix it for free.

Thanks again to all who helped me. And I hope this helps others too. My machine is like new now and I have my GT5 and saved data back. Happy days

Not great news. I've had mine running for around 6 days straight now Bspecing to L40.

I do save after every race onto a USB memory stick so I hope is fine.

The way I see it is, a PS is like a PC, keep it running as long as you like just be sure to maintain it well and keep it in the right environment.

I believe you about the shop, I just don't agree with that 6 hour rule and that it has anything to do with the DVD ROM dying, but ya never know.

I study computing in Oxford. You may all be suprised to learn that some of the big research computers are ps3's linked up. Sony do a modified platform for research purposes. Like any modern electrical hardware you need to look after it, these units can be left on and played on much longer than you could humanly find possible. Make sure you get good clearance and airflow around the unit and clean the vents regularly.

I have a buddy, who's PS3 died after 18 months.. with a Blue ray failure.. he'd bought it from game.. Thinking it was out of warranty he phoned Sony and they wanted £150 to fix it.. he contacted game (where he bought the PS3 from).. who told him out of warranty. Well he said fine I'll see you in court, I may have had the PS3 for 18 months but it's not had 18 months wear and tear on it, it's been used about 20 hours max (which it had!!) which is unacceptable for a device of this purchase price...not ft for purpose if it only lasts for 20 hours.

Long story short the Game agreed as a gesture of good will!! to repair the PS3.

Please remember in the UK that all electrical equipment like these consoles, TV's satellite receivers etc.. are covered by statutory legislation that gives more than 12 months warranty.

here's some advise given out that may be of help.

The only legislation you need refer to in the UK is the SOGA (Sale of Goods Act). The SOGA is entirely compliant with the latest EU directive, and by using the SOGA you receive all the protection offered by the EU directive, and more. As the limitation in using this Act is up to 6 years, you also have a longer time period than the EU regs offer.

When using statutory rights you may have to make your case, compared to a typical warranty where you just contact the retailer. The SOGA states that faults that occur before 6 months are presumed to have been there at the time of sale, unless the retailer can prove otherwise. After this time, it's up to the consumer to demonstrate the product's non-conformity with the regulations. A common way to do this is to get an engineer's report, which identifies the fault as being inherent in the product. You then present this to the retailer. If they still refuse to offer a remedy you can proceed with a Small Claims case.

Here's a couple of links which explain that the 'EU 2 year 'guarantee' isn't actually what it's commonly reported to be:

http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/bcc/trading_standards/consumer_advice/know-your_rights.page?

http://www.parliament.uk/briefingpapers/commons/lib/research/briefings/snha-02239.pdf

That's what the letter from the Repairer is for..

They did explain it to me but I forgot, sorry. Something like the Lens or the motor to spin the disc will go as aposed to the ROM itself. I should have explained more. But the end result is the same.

It's really a bad idea to have to use the disc to play as its accessing the disc lots. If we had just software installed we would not have this issue

But dont let this effect your fun time! I suggest you find a local 3rd party PS3 repair shop (there are lots in London) and have a backup plan for when you get a problem. And backup save data as much as possible (make several copies)

Take care all

For those in the totalconsolerepairs.co.uk very good price they can arrange collection and comes with 90 days warranty £65 for collection and repair of ylod. £107.50 for drive repair collection and delivery again with 90days warranty

Well I'm in NY, USA.. No such repair shops here that I'm aware of.

Good stuff, there seems to be a lot of these repair centers all over London. The one I went to was on the DLC (Dockland Light Railway) so it was easy for me to get to on the tube.

Cant tell you how happy I am now I have everything working. Not one crash so far. Happy days :)

I bought a new Blu Ray movie, Back to the Future trilogy.. PS3 recognised discs instantly, the same as game discs. The only movies I ever have problems with is Netflix Blu Rays.. I think it is a problem with the discs.

The lens on my PS3 stopped working last week (while remote-race hosting overnight). Luckily, I found a 3rd party repair shop to replace the lens for $100. Took 30 minutes. Not dirt cheap, but still much less expensive (and quicker) than sending it to Sony for out-of-warranty repair work. Also nice that they include a 6-month warranty for all their repair work.
