I have gone through and deleted/uninstalled everything that i wont use or is not required to keep my HP G60 running. Did a Disc Defrag and Cleanup and a reboot after i finished... and it actually got back up to speed.

Im sure the hard drive will give before too long, but i havent had any problems with my laptop through out the 5 years of its life. No over heating, or random crashing etc. But if the HDD dies its ok, i already have what i want to keep moved over to my desktop. The HDD was barely fragmented too.

Is there anything else i may be able to do to lengthen its life a year or two? I have cleaned it out already, about 3 months ago, not gonna lie, it was pretty dusty XD

The nicest thing right now, is i no longer have 3 java prompts telling me to update every 5 minutes.... i dont know how that came to be but im sure it happened around the time i first got my desktop and quit using my lappy as much.

The next thing that you can do is replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Also, you should not have to worry about the hard drive dying as they can last as long as 11 years(Had one computer that the hard drive's motor actually died) when treated correctly. I personally use speedfan to monitor the condition of my hard drives(Read the SMART tab and it even gives you a graphical representation of it's health).

I see, ya i have some paste left over from my desktop build that should still be good. I wont have to worry about the GPU since i only have integrated graphics.

Ill go an DL speed fan though, if i like i may even get it for my desktop as well. I didnt know it also trcked HDD statistics. I took the name too literally XD

The average lifespan of a hard drive is roughly 5 years.

I'd look to see if you could get a new cpu fan for it. Try ebay. That laptop might have two fans, but not sure. If you were going to the trouble of taking it all the away apart to re-apply the paste, I'd at least replace the fans while you are there.

Make sure you mark the screw positions so you know where each screw goes when you put it back together. Personally I sketch a rough outline of the laptop and tape each screw onto the location of the hole I took the screw out of. Some laptops are nice and give you a size of screw next to the hole, but not all of them.

If your interested, a small seagate 250GB hard drive can be had for around 50-60$ on newegg.

If you downloaded speedfan, some motherboards that aren't supported sometimes won't tell you the CPU/Mobo temperature. You can go into BIOS and there is a section that will show your temperatures. If they are still within a reasonable temp, I wouldn't be so worried about re-applying the paste.
