My problem with multiplayer games

I speak mostly of shooters here. My problem is that not enough people play the game for the experience of it, and too many people play just to win.

"Why is that a problem?"

I feel like too many people go onto a game and find some cheap strategy they can use, get really good at it, and rack up tons and tons of kills. Some people will snipe the entire time and crush everyone else, but that's all they do. In Halo, people will go around with the plasma sword and circle strafe --> kill anyone and everyone the entire game. Those are the types of things I'm talking about.

I know that those aspects are part the game, but it's like, why are you even playing? You're playing a military sim - how about you role-play a little and try to act like the military would? It's like you can't play a game online anymore like it was "supposed" to be played, because you always have some guy or two screwing it up by doing one thing and owning everyone else the entire time. Too focused on racking up the kills, instead of trying different weapons, moving around the map, sticking with your team.

I dunno, I could very well be wrong and be seeing this in the wrong light. Just something that's always bothered me.
 
IMO, the whole role-playing thing can be a bit iffy... a few months ago in a BF2:MC match there was part of a clan recruiting members (about 4-5 clansmen were in that match). All had headsets, all "strategized" together. For the latter half of that match, they all gathered around the side of a building with a few rocket launchers and a tank, basically obliterating any opposing vehicle coming down the road. They were issuing out commands to their own teammates like "do not go further" and "fire at the tank!".

The problem with that is that opponents rarely came their way, they sat there doing nothing the majority of the time, and the like. If I was apart of that, I'd get bored easily and want to actually kick ass and take names.

That's just my take though. BF2 isn't really a game where you can always whore out a particular tactic, and make the overall experience tasteless.
 
I do have limited experience with a broad range of online games, but I certainly know what you mean.

Gears of War, sometimes it's "every man for himself". It's not so bad in Player Matches, but you cannot avoid it most of the time. Plus it would be nice to achieve all those achievements...

It's similar for racing games. In PGR3 people tended to ram you off the road or into a wall. Once this happens, it's rare you manage to catch up, thus losing the race. It's not so bad in Forza 2, because you do recieve damage when you hit anything, but not completely avoidable.


The stuff that really does annoy me though is people's attitudes. This mainly happens in Gears of War. I'm not sure if it's because so many people speak in the game, or because it's the type of people who play it, but most of the people are not very nice. Not being racist here, but most of them are American. They swear constantly, any little thing someone gets wrong an argument starts, and sometimes, when they do realise you're from the UK, they don't like that. They blame you for connection/lag problems, they start calling you names, and give you bad reputation feedback. Almost everyone else is perfectly fine. UK people are friendly and keen to work with you. Again, it's better in Player Matches, but it should never be this bad.

Really? From what I've played of PGR3's MP (about a dozen times) people would get extremely pissed at you if you even touched their car, let alone crashing it into the wall.

I completely agree. It's most frustrating in games like RSV where stealth is the fun part of the game. Instead you get people playing Rambo style all the way through the map. I've had several bad experiences with young American players, mostly just bad language, costantly messing around shooting each other when friendly fire is off.

On the other hand I've had some brilliant multiplayer matches and I've always added the people in the game to my favourites so I can play with them again.
