Well, I'm running the old Viper I had lying around in the Trial Mountain enduro - talk about a blunt axe of a car!
It really doesn't care for being driven precisely - just get it pointed in roughly the right direction and stand on it...
I think I read somewhere that old man Andretti said the EXACT same thing. Then he proceeded to blow up the Viper's engine.
--- OK, so a little research tells the truth.
In one article,
The Best Handling Cars in America (Road & Track, June 1999), Mario Andretti says this about the Viper GTS R, "The Viper GTS-R is a monster. But it's a monster you can have fun with. What it's lacking in finesse, it makes up in power. Its character is much like that of the Cobra, which is crude, but that's the nature of this beast. In these cars, you can use power to pull youself out. The learning curve is steep--mainly you need to get organized in the cockpit before you can start ripping into it. It requires the most driving of the bunch. The car does feel sloppy, but you learn to deal with that sloppiness. And although you're very busy in the cockpit, the rewards are nice."
Cars in competition and their scores by Mario Andretti:
Acura NSX - 84
Chevrolet Corvette - 74
Dodge Viper - 69
Ferrari F355 Spider - 77
Lotus Esprit - 72
Porsche Carrera 4 - 86
Ouch, the home boys got blown away by a bunch of foreiners! That's to be expected (:
And in another article,
Fastest Street Legal Cars in America (Road & Track, August 1998), he has this to say about the Hennessey Venom 600 GTS, "This car has quite good aerodynamic balance at high speed. I would say that in the corners the Viper has been the quickest car so far. I just felt like I could really hang it out in this car. Typical of a high-torque engine in that you reach terminal velocity early. You don't build speed like in the McLaren, where it just feels like you are always accelerating. With the Viper I came off the corner and it was almost immediately at top speed. John told me it would pull 6500 rpm in 5th. I never saw 6500. I saw only 6300."
This was after he blew the engine. Actually an oil line burst and the hood caught fire. Made for a really great picture. I'll scan it when I get to work.
- McLaren F1 - 217.7 MPH, 6th Gear @ 7500 RPM
- Hennessey Venom 600 GTS - 205.4 MPH, 5th Gear @ 6300 RPM (disqualified for hardware failure)
- Lingenfelter Corvette 383 - 203.1 MPH, 5th Gear @ 6000 RPM (disqualified for obseanly high emisions, 3x the legal limit)
- Lingenfelter Corvette ZR-1 - 201.5 MPH, 5th Gear @ 6100 RPM (disqualified for obseanly high emisions, 2x the legal limit)
- RUF CTR 2 - 201.5 MPH, 5th Gear @ 5800 RPM
- Ferrari 550 Maranello - 193.4 MPH, 6th Gear @7500 RPM
- Toyota Supra Turbo by HKS - 183.6 MPH, 6th Gear @ 6200 RPM
And there you have it.
