“If it’s broke, continue to smack it off the wall”

Gran Turismo 5 was a great game in my opinion, it had plenty of faults for sure, but in terms of gameplay it had the best in the business in regard to physics. GT5 reached new heights for the core GT series but also underwhelmed with boring A.I. and a lack of events in comparison to previous games.

GT6 is sets out to remedy GT5′s faults and gain some lost ground to the other simulation game knocking at it’s door, however, in true recent GT fashion it focuses on areas that didn’t need improvement and ignores some key areas that a game of GT’s stature shouldn’t even consider at this stage.

GT6 contains an entierly new physics model which at it’s core, is staggering. The cars feel more alive than ever and even with a questionable sense of speed, you really do feel the excitement of driving most of the in-game cars, of which there are over 1000. I say most because the MR cars in the game are downright….strange. Occasionally driveable, they provide the most challenge in the game being completely unpredictable and downright insane. Even though cars of this aspiration tend to be monsters, surely they couldn’t be this lopsided? I could be wrong but regardless the new physics create an almost space-like feeling when you try to maintain control. It’s a good thing that you can forgive this by taking a Super GT class car around the perfectly recreated Nurburgring in a 24 hour time lapse. It’s truly breath-taking stuff, as we see more of Polyphony Digital’s mastery, as a sky renders in real time as spittles of rain fall from the sky. At moments like this, it’s hard not to fall in love with GT and motoring in general.

Speaking of the Nurburgring, GT6 is chock full of tracks and what a premium selection it is. Everything you could ask for is here and knocks any other title out of the ballpark. From Bathurst to Spa, Twin Ring Motegi to Suzuka. Most of the Real-Life representations match up with GT’s trademark original creations to create a stellar list of tracks for you to race on.

There’s a big problem with that last sentence, and it’s the fact that GT6 is hellbent on not letting you do actual races. It’s a strange thing to be missing on a game that has inspired real-life race cars from the godly Adrian Newey, but the A.I. problems from GT5 are still mostly prevalent and minus some moments of sheer brilliance it’s easy to feel like you are just overtaking traffic in real life. It’s sorely disappointing, and it’s accompanied by a lack of events. While all the special events in the game are handled well, with personal touches like an actual invitation to the Good-wood Festival of Speed and re-creating man’s trip to the moon, you could be forgiven for wanting to sacrificing moon missions for endurance races. Yes, you read that correct, the endurance races are gone. The cutbacks from GT5 don’t stop here either, in an attempt to streamline the overall interface Online takes a massive hit too. Fan favorite ‘Shuffle Racing’ has disappeared from existence, and so too has ‘speed testing’ your cars offline.

Gran Turismo 6 reinvents itself from GT5, but in doing so, it seems like Polyphony lost sight on what’s important and what it built it’s fanbase on. It’s great that Gran Turismo has become a tool for helping Nissan recruit drivers and letting real life manufacturers go crazy with out of this world designs that can actually be driven on digitally created real-life landscapes. It’s things like this that show how special GT is as a result of it’s roots and previous titles. However, PD’s lack of interest in improving the core game for gamers and not aspiring hot-lapping race-drivers shows and gives any willing competitor a chance at taking the console race simulation crown.

  • Phenomenal physics
  • Stunning in-race weather and effects
  • Vast array of tracks
Cons

  • Lack of events
  • MR cars have strange behavior
  • Feels diluted from GT5
  • A.I. are arguably worse than it’s predecessor
  • Feels unfocused and sloppy

Well, I don't think GT6 is a blow-you-away title. I tend to look at GT6 as unfinished business from GT5. It lacks a lot of the excitement of GT5 and some of the many features that made GT5 good, but GT6 is a very good title. Not great- but very good. Your comments are surely spot-on.
