GTA: Vice City, an RPG?

Ok, so I know this sounds bad, but hear me out. ;)

My search for a new game was driving me mad. All I wanted was a game that would keep track of a long quest, while at the same time providing new challenges to keep my interest. (Honestly, I also wanted to find something with "fan service" content. :drools: :naughty:  )

I really wanted to get something like Final Fantasy X so that I could have fun with all of the amazing animations and cut scenes. All of the magic, summons, cut scenes and "limit breaks" from final fantasy 7 showed me that RPGs could actually be fun. So I set out to find my next ff7, and decided ffX would be the best way to go.

However, after looking around for final fantasy, and a good day/ night of rain, I stayed in and gave up on my quest for the day... but as the day ended, so did my patience, and at that point I decided to start up a new game.

In comes Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
The game keeps track of everything you do.
GTA has an awesome and dramatic story acted out by the best actors in any game. GTA progresses in difficulty providing new challenges constantly and most importantly, GTA is just plain fun.

So I am letting go of the magic and graphics of FFx, but only in a trade for the long term criminal career played out in GTA.

So what do you all think?
Is gta a rpg in a way?
Should I still go bother with FFx?
Is GTA where I should place my game time or should I just leave gta in the case it has been in for so long already?

Thanks for getting back to me with your feelings on all the issues above, as well as any other side notes you all can think of.

Later. :D

Vice City is not an RPG,because you don't play as multiple characters. That's what defines an RPG.These 2 games are the absolute best in their category. While Vice City has the open ended gameplay(do whatever you like, whenever you like),FF on the other hand has the better and more immersive storyline.I find the latter more important, that's why i like FF games better(especially FF X).
The only problem with FF X is the replayabiliity, once you finish the game, there won't be much left to do.There are sidequests, but most of them aren't any fun.Vice City on the other hand can be played forever,it doesn't get boring.
And by the looks of it,San Andreas will surpass Vice City tenfold in every way.
Now,i'can't tell you wich one to pick,it all depends on what you like more.Do you like an immersive and awesome storyline,go for FFX.Do you like open ended gameplay,go for Vice City.

I already decided which. :D

I wasn't even really trying to say vice city is an rpg. I think you are taking that just a little bit too literally.

What I mean by bringing up the rpg element, is that...
In gta, we get recognition for our experience on a very indepth level, and we get personal assurance of our character's "bad-ass-ity" because of our own exploits in beating certain missions.

Take that element of vice city (what I am playing), and you will get a game that has a similar concept to RPG where the player is responsible for building the combat skills of their characters.

Now, there is no doubt, gta is not an rpg.

However, I want to stress that an rpg is not solely determined on whether or not a player controls a group. (there are single character rpgs like "fable" for the xbox.) (I believe that is the game's name. ;) )

But you did have a good review of why or why not to play the games... and of course the technical ideas for why gta is, in fact, not an rpg. (which it isn't )

Anyway,...

What I wanted to discuss is the similarities of the gta games to rpgs.

I think that RPGs have a more in depth connection between the "leveling up" and "in game strength" than gta does.

RPGs are all about being able to grow in terms of what kind of magical attacks you can unleash... starting at simple magic attacks, and ending on earth splitting attacks makes for an awesome experience. (unique to RPGs)
(that is why I want an rpg to play.
;) )

But gta is similar in some ways just because your power grows throughout the story, your wealth grows, your strength as a player grows (since you constantly work on your skills thanks to increasingly difficult missions), and of course, you get the stats page with overall ratings and records.

GTA is no rpg, but it does a good job of substituting when I have a taste for a long term video game quest.

btw, if you guys do have any opinions on any of the ps2 rpgs out there, keep an eye out for a thread in the ps2 forum.
And don't sneak in there to make one before me. ;)
Later.
