When I first bought a wheel (Logitech MOMO) several years ago, I just had it attached to my desk and used it for LFS. After my laptop died the wheel disappeared somewhere in a closet. When I moved out of my parents house and into my own apartment it still remained packed in a box because I still didn't had a computer I could use it with. But then I just couldn't stand not being able to race anymore and I bought a PS3 with GT5.
At first I mounted the wheel to a IKEA barstool which was just the right hight to use with the chair I had and hooked it all up to my tv, which is a pretty old Sony Trinitron crt tv. After a while I got tired of setting it all up every time I wanted to play, so I would just pull up the 'barstool wheel mount' to the sofa and used a usb extension cord to reach to the PS3 by the tv.
Since the tv had a pretty poor image quality (it's good for watching tv, but sucks to use for gaming) and a sat pretty far away (2,5~3 meters) I couldn't see much of anything, so it was time to get a new tv! Well, not a new tv since those are pretty expensive so I thought I'd just buy a computer monitor, those are way cheaper than buying a new tv.
After searching online for 3 days I decided on buying a Philips 21,5" lcd monitor with led backlight, it also had intergrated speakers but the main thing was that it had a hdmi port and it's full HD 1080p :D oh and it was pretty cheap (and on sale!).
After using the monitor on top of the barstool that had the wheel attached to it and still sitting on the sofa, I was really sick of the whole setup, it just wasn't practical to use and I had wires running trough the livingroom, almost tripped over the hdmi cable and almost pulled the brand new monitor off of the barstool.
I played around with the idea to convert a part of the big closet in the livingroom to become my 'rig'! There were a few shelves I hardly used, some stuff I could easily store on other shelves. The whole closet is made of parts that can easily changed, so that's what I did :D
I placed a shelf on the correct hight to mount the wheel and put the monitor on, another shelf above it to hold the PS3 and that was pretty much it actually :) Had to make a tiny adjustment to a shelf to make it stick out a bit so the position of the wheel compared to the padles fitted my legs comfortly and I was ready to go!

So that's kind my story on how my setup 'evolved' from desk to barstool to 'closet rig' :)

Ofcourse this topic isn't complete without pictures :D The aren't really good ones, but do show how I've got it setup :)

It's close (next to) a window so I can look out and see what's going on outside every now and than and provide light ofcourse, it's also next to a radiator so I won't get cold. I don't have a light near, so it'll get a bit dark in the evening, but that's the way I like it :)

I hope it wasn't too boring to read :) And let me know what you think of my 'closet rig' :D

That's... actually genuinely pretty innovative... very nicely played!

I'm moving to a studio apartment tomorrow so I may just have to plagiarize politely ask permission to take inspiration from this idea

Congrats Spongeinside on the improved setup. I enjoyed reading that.

I think it's safe to say for many of us, this hobby had very humble beginnings like yours.

Thanks :D
At first I wanted to build something out of wood, but I thought, why not just use what I already have instead of buying all kinds of new stuff :) and I kinda already spend money I shouldn't have spend on the monitor :scared: so it kinda worked out with the closet :P

Thanks! It sure is :D altough it a bit had to get out due to the seat I use, I have to gently shove backwards to get out from under the wheel :) But it's worth it and gets easier over time :P
