Hi Everyone

My name is Jonas
I am new to this forum.

I just got a problem with my xbox360.
It started to blink with 3 red lights and refuses to turn on.

I started to look for the problem in Google and found that it is problem that many have had and is called "Red light of death".

I also found a couple of pages that explains it in detail.

The information that I could get for free did not solve my problem.
So my question is could anyone give any advice on how to fix my xbox?
I am short on money so I can't afford to send it to Microsoft.
I don't have any warranty on my Xbox because I chipped it my self so I have opened it up before.

Thanks
Jonas Lindberg

I think this wants moving into the Xbox 360 section, you might be able to get more help there. Don't bother posting it again though, a moderator should be able to move it for you. 👍

MS wont fix it if you chipped it

Yes they will...I speak from experience! ;)

And I got it done free under the RRoD 3 year warranty! Sent it away May 23rd, came back June 4th!

Also got a free 1 month LIVE gold card for my "troubles"! :D

Im not really, because I know A LOT of people that have done the same! I also know people who have been refused repair too!

The main thing is to ensure that your case has not been chewed up from opening it, and if your console still works on LIVE (ie not banned) then that also helps! But I do know people who have even had banned consoles and consoles with chewed up cases repaired/replaced, however generally those are the ones that are most likely to be refused repair.

M$ dont fix the consoles themselves, they outsource the work to another company who seemingly dont give a crap. :) That might be because they work on a commition type system, so the more consoles they fix the more they make. I dont know for sure, but that would make perfect sense for them not giving a crap.

Hell M$ dont even design/develop or even manufacture the 360! They are a software company so any hardware design/development and anything else to do with hardware (like repairs) is all outsourced, because they dont have the resources to do it in-house, unlike Sony who are into both hardware and software (mainly hardware).

I even know of 2 or 3 people who have sent them back with copies still in the drives and had their console repaired or replaced and the copy was sent back to them with their (now working) console in a plastic sleeve!

I wish i got mine chipped now:grumpy:

The poor design in cooling is the exact reason i haven't chipped mine. I knew that one day it had a chance of breaking and then i would run the risk of getting turned down for the free repair, and i didn't want that. Lesson learned, if you want to keep your warranty do what they say and don't tamper with it.

Welcome to the club. You've officially been through the complete experience of owning a X360.

As for the 3 Red Lights, nothing you can do. The towel trick is temporary and causes even more damage, as well as any other temp. solutions. You're just going to have to call MS up, wait for the coffin, and then find something to do for the next couple weeks.

Actually you can fix it, well its not a 100% fix for every xbox with the 3 rings but there is a good bit that will work just fine after you do the fix. The problem is with the heat sink as i am sure you have read. Here's a link to not only how to fix the problem but also one of my favorite websites:tup: Let us know if you attempt it and how it goes.

The problem with the 360 isn't just the cooling, its the CHEAP & NASTY 'X' clamp they use to hold the heatsinks in place.

The 'X' clamps flex the board and when the console heats up the BGA joints at the edge of the GPU come loose and cause the 3RL to appear.

Anyway, as I said above, there's a 99% chance M$ will fix it, even if its been opened!

Not really OT, only slightly,

I just heard rumours that XboX 360 repairs have cost MS in the vicinity of 1 billion dollars..

I pity the fool who said the words "Look boss, with this solution, we can save 35 cents pr. box" ;-)

They're not just rumors mate! They're true! When M$ extended the RRoD warranty to 3 years they put aside $2 billion for it, so if they have only spent $1 billion then they're doing better than they originally thought they would!

Thats what they get for pushing out a product and letting the hard working people that spend a huge chunk of cash on the system beta test it for them.
