It flashes green/red on boot, after green/off twice.

Stupid Tompson drive is at fault here, I've taken the Box apart, cleaned it all out.
Just to make sure it wasn't overheating.

No good.

Took the Tompson apart, manually cleaned the lens, made sure everything in it was in working order. no good.

So, I decided to boot the Xbox with the "lid" off the Tompson. On boots that fail, the CD doesn't spin at all. On boots that work, the CD spins right away (Note that I don't recommend trying that, theres nothing to hold the CD down)

So, my conclusion: Theres something up with the Tompson taking power on boot. I'm not sure if it's really the CD drive or the board.
I get DDEs during games alot, and then I have to leave the Box off for a half hour before I can get it to work again.

If anyone knows any possible solution that'll cost me less than $50, I'm all for it.

You can buy a new DVD drive. You could get a samsung. I'd have to learn more about it myself, but my friend was just talking about replaceing an XBOX DVD drive today.

after renting killzone for the ps2,my ps2 again is making a ticking noise.i'm gonna take it apart again when i'm off work for a few days and hoping it's just dust build-up cause it's the same noise it made with GTA:VC before i got a DRE error.

just buy a lens cleaner for ps2s.....thats usually the case with them.

a few months ago i was getting errors from my xbox, so i replaced the thompson drive with another thompson drive (after a cleaning of the lens didnt work). i know they are quite a bit cheaper now than the $70 i paid for mine, but one thing to take into consideration is that the thompson drive doesnt read burned cd's and the newer drives can. for example if you wanted to copy some music to the harddrive.

check out www.llamma.com , they have alot of xbox replacement parts, they even have a "tune up" kit for xbox with some upgraded replacement parts in a bundle for cheap.

I have a problem with my xbox also. I resonantly bought halo 2 and right out of the package new as hell first day the game came out not a scratch on the disc, I pop it into the console and it trys to play the game but I get a message saying the disc cant be read is dirty or damaged, m like wtf? So I take the disc out and look at it again and its fine, so I throw that game back in and it starts the game no problem, plays the game for a while then boom it displays it again disc is dirty or damaged. I clean the disc and try again it works just fine. Then a few months later I rent nfsu2 and the game is un-playable wont even boot the game, so I get all pissed that me $300 gaming system has turned into a ugly paper weight. So I go out and buy a dvd/cd lens cleaner from my work and plop it into my xbox it goes trough its process and I put nfsu2 in and it boots the game but as soon as I get into the game it seems like the game is behind itself and starts to lag and not load sections of the city, then freezes ant tells me the disc is the culprit again. So I call Microsoft’s xbox hotline and they tell me I have to spent $80 and sent it to them and have it gone for 2 weeks, first of all im not paying $80 on top of what I have spent on making this thing do what I want it to do, so im talking to the guy on the phone and he keeps telling me that I cant talk to tech support because they don’t have the number for it, bull****. so I ask to talk to a supervisor and by this time im very angry, and the supervisor tells my the same crap the pee-on was telling me, then he hangs up on me, I call back and talk to someone else who claims to be the highest person there and she tells me to erase my hard drive and try it then, so I do I loose all my game saves and all my everything and it does **** my xbox is still just sitting there blinking green at me looking like a big green and black foot rest. So she tells me that she is sorry and they are closing and she has to go and I basically get hung up on again. Right now I am ready to go there and demand to talk to supervisor after supervisor until I am talking to bill him self. Should I be so angry or do I need to see a counselor? As I sit here looking at me xbox I get angrier and my face gets all red, soon I think I might just put the thing out of its misery and shoot the damn thing.

Lol, just calm down, take it easy and just breathe slowly.
Count with me now, 1 ,2 ,3,,,,,, there you go. Anger is relieved. 👍
Seriously, ours has done the same and we just reset the machine.
It is frustrating to have to do this but guess with MicroSoft at the helm, what do you expect. :indiff:
Good luck with it.

For some reason i get that too, but only with Halo. Probably your game. i just think its odd that the company repsonsible for the xbox can't even develop a game for it that functions properly.

alsa mistax. dont think that DRE's are only confined to ps2s. the wording might be different, but the problem is still the same. i have both a ps2 and an xbox. after my four ps2s suffering from DREs, i purchased an xbox. i thought that the problem was over, but eventually it happened to my xbox too. besure to check your games for scratches - they take the form of 'perfect rings' around the center of the game disc. if you can see them (they might only be hairline), then you optical drive is buggered. you'll have to get your xbox looked at, and maybe fixed.

you are at risk of damaging your games if you continue to play through this problem. take heed.

My PS2 has always gotten DRE's on GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas.
I have a first series unit, purchased on release day in Oct.,2000.
I routinely take the drive apart to clean the lens, sometimes as frequently as once a week. If freshly cleaned, the PS2 will play San Andreas flawlessly for hours.
The funny thing is I have a friend who I like to call "King Masher" since he nearly ruined my O button on my original DS2 playing MK: DA. I can play San Andreas for hours with no DRE's, but when he takes over and starts running around tapping X (sprint) like a maniac, I tell him just to "pulse" on the X button and chill out a little.
"But, but..." and then he loves to frantically check the map every 22 seconds while feverishly changing the stations. And he wonders why the DRE's start coming while he plays.
He did make Halo2 freeze up twice on my XBox.
I don't care for the XBox controller too much compared to a DS2, but I'm afraid for it's safety. I haven't had my XBox very long (6 mo.), and I don't play it that much, but I did notice that after playing Halo2 for long periods, the game would start to feel a little sluggish and sometimes the texture bumping would get really bad. That happened in the single-player or co-op mode. The multi-player felt fast in split screen with none of the above conditions.
I have a new reason to keep my XBox...Doom 3.
I have never seen an id game that was not on the very top notch, and I've played 'em all, so I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
Just gotta watch out for "King Masher" (foreboding vision of flying parts from Controller S)

Well heres a good reason why it happens... First answer this question... does anyone smoke in the house? if the answer is yes, ok, If not can you smell food cooking, or incesne burning from the room that you game console is in?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, And do not care about voiding your warranty, I can tell you what I did to fix mine.

First you need some supplies, a good precision tool kit or computer tool kit, Windex, Canned air (DO NOT USE AN AIR COMPRESSOR), cotton swabs, very importantly some refrigerator magnets and a sheet of white paper.

The magents go under the white paper so you can put the screws down and not loose them on top of a whtie piece of paper.

First you open the case, then look for the dvd drive, take out the little screw around the perimeter, and pop off the top of the dvd drive... you may have to move other things to get to it but I can't sit here all day and re-do this for you, once you have the cover off, you should see the lens, don't blow on it just put a little glass cleaner on the cotton swab, and lighty make circles on the lens, you shouldn't have to scrub, now use the dry end to get around the edges of the lens to ensure there is no liquid left.

Now since you have it wide open, go ahead and dust out the inside with the canned air, this is why magnets are important, so you don't blow the screws all over the place.

Put it back together, and commence playing.

Since I did this last year I have no problems.

I was having problems with DOOM 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with XBOX error stating "problem with the disc it may be dirty or damaged". I cleaned it per above and it works. :)

Some advice:
- My dvd drive is a Thompson drive.
- There are 6 screws that you can access on the bottom of the XBOX that hold the cover onto the base unit. 4 are under the foot pads and the other two are under the lables. Once you take them out, the top cover comes straight off.
- You will need to move the disc drive out of the way. There is one screw in between the drive and the dvd player.
- There are two screws that hold the dvd player in place both are in the front part of the unit.
- Take the dvd out of the XBOX and then remove the two small screws that hold the dvd top cover in place.
- Once you remove it, you can clean the dvd player lens per above.
- I used the air to dry off the lens once it was cleaned.
- While I had the 2 XBOX cooling fans exposed, I went ahead and cleaned the fan blades with air since the dust will lower the performance of the cooling for the chip and unit. There are 2 fans, so give them a good burst of air and the dust will come off.

I get dirty disc errors for PGR2 and got it once with Forza. The thing is, I get dirty disc errors when I'm playing online and everyone in the same room I'm with gets the same problem.
