Here is part of a quiz I took part in last week - this part is called 'The Marathon Round', which is done in a half-hour 'intermission' between the two halfs of the quiz... Many thanks to John (aka Quizmaster Spon) who came up with all of these 'clues'... Non-UK members might struggle with some of these, since this list was compiled for a UK audience by a UK person, so bonus points may be awarded to non-UK members and for close/good incorrect answers. My team (consisting of three people) managed to get 23.5/30 in the half-hour time slot (although I personally got 14 in that time period). If you want to try 'professional mode', limit yourself to 30 minutes and see how you get on!
(By the way, the next best score by any of the 11 other teams in the quiz was 19/30, using 6 people! The average score was well below that...)
Please PM me your answers once you are finished, and I'll post a leaderboard in due course 👍 (please also let me know if you attempted 'professional mode')
As was the case in the actual quiz, you can have one (major) clue for one particular question...
(edit: one or two have more than one acceptable correct answer, so don't worry too much about making your choice!)
There are 30 pop bands whose names have been replaced by crossword-style clues. e.g. For the clue “Inside the perimeter of the wooded shoreline” the correct answer would be “Justin Timberlake”
1. Rather attractive objects despite being covered in muck.
2. Black. Really, really black
3. You’ll have to think about the name of this band
4. A disoriented cad
5. Jack would like to tell you a story
6. Can’t someone give these visionaries a map?
7. Half a white whale
8. This electric band swings both ways
9. Cheap cars from Japan
10. Elizabethan tent-builder?
11. Pretending to have sex?
12. Fanatics who worship colourful seafood
13. Without this band, my few bottles of coke will go flat.
14. A mean drum leads to romantic sadness
15. This insect will rust before it will take off
16. A curious hound
17. Bussed in during the miner’s strike
18. A continental band
19. This cricketer will work for food
20. Camp guys from an age gone by
21. Who’d have thought there were this many paradises?
22. The end of a slayer
23. Shouldn’t this clue be for a tube station?
24. This musical genre will devour its very essence
25. U-boats from Great Britain
26. Astrological symbols can mess with your brain
27. Precocious child?
28. A fleeting appearance
29. Large explosions, can be heard but not seen
30. Living or not?
lotus350 - 14.5 (13 right, 3 half marks)
Omnis - 7 (6 right, 2 half marks)
kylenhat - 7 (6 right, 2 half marks)
DQ - 3
