Is it just me or does it seem next to impossible to 2 car draft at Daytona with the AI cars for more than a short section? It's like they just try to get out of your way and get you off their bumper all the time...

Or do I just suck at it?

They seem to try their best to avoid any contact unless they are behind you. If you want to do a 2man draft with AI then I suggest trying to place your car in front of an AI and letting him bump draft you.

Ok so I'm not just crazy. Ya I've had them draft me and that works fine as long as I keep backing up to them (not very productive) and line drafting behind them seems "ok"...

Mainly I just wanted to get some practice before hopefully doing some online races eventually so I don't crash everyone around me.

Doesn't make things any easier when they drop 30mph for turn 3 x-( Who the hell ever heard of shifting at Daytona? They go so slow I can safely grab 3rd gear! Even with all the settings all the way up for AI x-(

Yeah I have no clue why they did that. I almost threw my controller out the window when my Bspec Bob did it. :(

But online drafting is relatively easy aslong as you avoid laggy players and servers with high ping.

Ya I've gotta say overall the NASCAR is the only thing I'm truly dissapointed about in this game so far. Hoping the onlines will be what I picture (if/when I ever get to do it) :-(

The programming for the AI has no idea what to do with Daytona. They hit the brakes and they don't draft particularly well.
Before the update that put you at a tremendous disadvantage, the A-Spec NASCAR race at Daytona was a complete joke. You could win by 15 to 20 seconds.

Ya that's the thing... idk why everyone has such a damn hard time figuring out the dynamics of NASCAR. But the easiest most obvious thing to ANY programmer should be to carry speed on a superspeedway... duh.

What makes GT5 AI efficient (few crashes, collision avoidance) at every other track makes them terrible at Daytona. There would need to be special programming just for that track and it would have to change with each car.
If you use the driving line, it suggests braking...the AI follows the rules.

Ya I suppose that is true.

I guess the whole point of it though is that I was starting to feel like an idiot not being able to bump/push them and the AI self preservtion is apparently why. On the same hand it kinda sucks I can't dump the 48 in turn 4 if I want to lol...

Guess I just use it for tuning

Honestly that is probably the worst way to practice for online Nascar racing. The only way your going to learn is to just jump in a room. Let them know you're knew and most good racers will understand and help you along. Just run the basic setup you find in the oval tunery to start with and when you get the hang of it you can start playing around with different settings.

Just a few pointers (I've been racing Nascar online since this game came out);
Basic etiquette is not to pass under the yellow line unless you are forced to. And if you do give the position back if it's safe to.

If you can't hold your line drift to the back and ride around till you get a feel for it.

Don't be afraid to let out of the throttle mid corner to keep from slipping under someone's quarter panel, (number one cause of wrecks) you will catch them on the straight in no time.

Along the same lines don't be in a hurry to get to the front. You can ride half throttle behind others for quite awhile and still win the race. It's easier to ride around for a bit than to try and catch the pack from a straightaway behind after you're done spinning.

Above all else just be respectful to the host and others and you should be fine.

Yup, I am an avid NASCAR fan and understand all the stuff in real life so I figure the same rules an essential physics apply here. Good advice for someone who doesn't know though. Lord knows there are plenty.

I must admit that I've been a bit leary to just jump into a room since I haven't leveled up a whole lot yet (I think im at 23 right now) Been denied a few times due to my "experience" or rather lack of. Maybe they were just jags who knows. I always try to be as courteous as possible.

I'll check out the link you posted and thanks :)

Getting kicked because of your level is pretty lame, but it happens. Most guys actually look at how many friends you have since a lot of guys have multiple accounts. If you can't find a room that will let you stay you can always try a dirty room not the greatest racing but you can still learn a lot and I highly doubt they will care about your level.

What's your handle I'll keep an eye out for you (ZRod69 here). Right now I'm mostly in the 600hp restrictor plate rooms.

That could also explain something since I have a grand total of 1 friend who is my 6yo son.

I am sfam23 on PSN. I'll keep an eye out ;)

Found the problem, arcade mode.

Once I did it in GT mode all was very good. Went online and one 3 in a row :)

Glad you fixed it.

Take note that you can change the aggressiveness of the AI in arcade mode as you see fit. Doing that might change how they respond to attempts to bump draft them, as well as how fast they take the corners. . .

Is that under track settings? I figured by choosing the top tier (pro or expert setting or whatever it is) that they would behave as in the extreme events but obviously not. I'll look around I guess.

The other thing I wanted to ask (maybe out of scope for this post but couldn't seem to find in another thread) is what is up with some of the cars online shifting wildly side to side? Is this the "lag" issue I've heard about? Or someone using a DS3? Or just someone being a neurotic a**?

What you describe sounds like lag.

The most common telltale that a player is using a DS3 is the back of the car wagging.

That's a good description of what I saw, wagging, LOTS of it.

I can't imagine how many people get wiped out by being too close to a car like that :-(

It's in the options menu on the main screen (before entering GT Life or Arcade mode). Under Genera/Arcade you will find settings for default number of laps, AI Car Characteristics, and Visible Damage.

Keep in mind, though, that my idea was only a hypothesis. I don't run in Arcade pretty much ever, so I have no experience to tell you whether it works or not.

Understood. Honestly I've never really liked arcade mode much as it just always seemed to me like the physics are different from sim mode. Honestly I probably wont be going back to arcade again except for trying out the different settings you mentioned.
