Ok, this race is a living nightmare. Ten laps of pure hell on Earth.
Could somebody please help me out? WTF do you need to do in order to avoid those other turds spinning you off the track? I've tried going on the inside, I've tried the outside, everything I can think of.
Doesn't make any difference. At some point in the race (between lap 4 and lap 6 at the very best) some @!~!!¬: sends my car spinning and it's a case of see ya, baby! Restart.
I must have tried between 30-40 times and I seem no closer to solving this enigma.
My NASCAR fan buddies entertain the philosophy that NASCAR is really monumentally difficult in terms of simply driving the cars. They're amazed all to hell and back by the fact that the things weigh around two tons and still the drivers manage to keep them going in a straight line or gentle arch. They think it takes enormous amounts of skill just to get the car around the track. Driving the cars around the track is easy. Overcoming the enormous luck factor and not getting spun out are the tricky bits.
One problem here is luck; being in the right place at the right time. Part of the nature of this motorsport is that being the car out in front automatically makes you slower than the cars behind you, who benefit from being behind you, which grants them the power to overtake you whenever they choose, and there isn't much that you can do about it except maybe to try blocking, but the problem with that is that swerving about can get yourself spun out.
Further, a problem with GT5 is that even doing absolutely nothing at all beyond keeping your track position can get you spun out as soon as a car, any car, rams you, and they
will ram you. I don't really follow NASCAR, as it's not my motorsport of choice, but I check in on the occasional race now and then, and all of the real-world drafting that I've seen has been regular drafting and not "slam drafting", such as the AI in GT5 employs. In real life, there's a combination of 1) drivers having the ability to
not pound the back of your car as hard as they possibly can but rather quietly tucking in behind you to match your speed, and 2) the fact that they deliberately built some give into the rears of the cars so that a tap at the rear doesn't violently upset your car. In GT5, the AI rivals will ram you as hard as they can and will definitely upset your car in a big way.
It doesn't help that you don't have a spotter, either. With a spotter you could be informed about what other cars around you are doing and their exact positions in relation to you. In GT5 you have to rely on what you can determine through different camera views. If you're used to driving in the cockpit or as close to that as possible, driving from a camera view floating behind you could be disorienting and an unfavorable option, and cycling through camera views just to get a peek or regularly toggling the rear view can mean taking your eyes off the road ahead of you.
I wish that I could offer some sort of help here, but I can't. I won these events when we were still able to toggle ABS off, which effectively crippled ASM, so I was able to pull enough of a gap that the folks behind me stayed back there without being able to threaten me. I'm just sort of highlighting issues with this sort of event, I guess. The best suggestions I've seen are to deliberately
not take the lead but rather to lurk just shy of the lead, drafting someone, and then pouncing near the end.
