Welcome to the third national driver thread. Brazil has produced many of the highest level Grand Prix drivers in history and has also had a strong showing in countless other race series around the world. However, I expect this round to be one of the most crushing victories for my first nomination. I'm talking, of course, about the man in my avatar who is perhaps the epitome of a racing driver, Ayrton Senna. Always at the top of his class, his talent was plain to see as soon as he started driving. Had a great championship battle with Martin Brundle in British F3 in 1983 (which he eventually won). Entered F1 in 1984 with the lowly Toleman team and very nearly won the 6th round of the championship, at Monaco. But for the race being stopped (due to torrential rain) while he was in 2nd place, quickly closing down the leader (Alain Prost) many feel he would have taken the win. Senna continued on with a long and distinguished career to win 3 world championships (with many controversies along the way, including clashing with Alain Prost twice at Suzuka). He died at Imola in 1994 after leaving the track at the 190+mph Tamburello corner and striking a concrete wall.
My second nomination is to another Grand Prix driver, Rubens Barrichello. The only teammate to Michael Schumacher who gave him a real challenge and was able to beat Schumacher a few times on a level playing field. Had the lion's share of the bad luck in the Ferrari team when he raced from them from 2000 to 2005 and never got the rewards he richly deserved. Forced to move over several times by Ferrari in order to strengthen Michael Schumacher's championship chances. Deserves to win a Formula 1 World Championship before he retires, IMO.
