National Finals - How was it technically set up?

Not talking about who made it in...talk about how the four PS3's running the game were linked.

Was it a special edition of the game, where there was were the Academy races?
Was it the normal retail release, using private online rooms?
Was it a slightly modified retail version with LAN mode?

Just curiosity more than anything else...if anyone who was there can chime in.
 
Lan mode is possible with the retail version of the game, I believe that's how it was set up.
 
The odd thing was, I swear there were a few times that I felt some lag while driving during the finals. I think a few others said they felt it at times too, maybe they can share. As far as the game version, it seemed like the standard retail version of the game as far as I could tell. Everything looked exactly the same as far as menus , options, etc.
