GTPlanet, I'm a big college football fan. And now that the Bowl Games are over and USC is crowned champions, I made a small pledge to myself to follow college basketball and get into the feel of the game. If it is one thing that sports fans love about college basketball over college football is the fact that it's a tournament and generally CONTROLS the month of March. Add Brad Nessler, Dick Vitale, 320 teams (including some teams you may have never heard of if you're a college football fan), tournaments galore, and what do you get? Something like NCAA March Madness 2004. I decided to get this game over the latest just because I wanted to learn about college basketball and what makes it so great. After playing it about 3 or 4 hours, here is my rap sheet on it.

PROS: exciting action, make-you-think game play, MANY teams, various arenas, tournament play, (I'll admit) Dickie V really brings excitement to even the most dull games

CONS: fun but not really, doesn't seem authentic, rivalry games don't seem as fun as NCAA Football, lots of limits even with Create-a-School, rather dull menus, no Auto-Save or dialogs involving saves (not like the NCAA Football games).

VERDICT: NCAA March Madness 2004 seems to lack a lot and has too many shadows. The excitement of the game is still there to behold. NCAA MM 2005 is out there now, and all I wanted to do was learn the game. I think ESPN College Hoops 2004 seems to have an easier learning curve and has the "luxury" of ESPN visuals. Regardless, NCAA March Madness 2004 is good for anyone who wants to get into the game and learn why it's so good. Or maybe I'm so much of a football fan that I haven't really given any real attention to making at least some effort getting into college basketball.

Then again, 2004 was hailed by Official Playstation Magazine (or EGM?) as not being a good year for college basketball video games. Maybe I regret not getting NCAA March Madness 2005. If you have that, feel free to review for me, granted I don't at least rent the game.
