I've been playing Gran Turismo since the beginning. One thing I've noticed with long sessions at the wheel is I get a pain in my neck. Does anyone else experienced this?

Yes, I do get neck pain if I am doing long sessions at the wheel, but a few months ago I have found if I take a break after about 20 minutes from racing and pause the game for around 5 minutes and relax or just go for a short walk doing this did help my neck. 👍

I have noticed that the angle of your head/neck to the angle of the seat back, can cause neck pains. I don't sit perfectly up, but I don't set my seat back like a recliner either.

I would recommend trying different rig setups, till you find something more comfortable.

You're not the only one. I use a DFGT and a Wheel Stand Pro with a Yugoslavian chair covered with a cushion from Ikea. I get some pains from time to time, mainly in my right leg. I agree with everyone else, take some breaks, find a position that is more comfortable and try to relax while you play.

When I built my Racing Station, I made sure that the seat that I used had infinite adjustablity on the backrest. Comfort is invaluable when racing

in Gran Turismo. We all tend to get so involved that the time that we race is for very long sessions.

GT's a pain in the neck, who would've thought it! A Pain in the ears maybe. ;)

Seriously though, I can race for a good 5 hours online & get no pains at all. My Playseat Evolution with a Passion Automotive lumbar support is very comfortable.

Any time you sit in a fixed position and use your arms extensively, you will encounter the possibility of neck pain, due to the somewhat unnatural strain the steering effort has upon the spine and unused, nearby musculature. For many who have suffered damage in the area of the back or neck, the problem is exacerbated, due to scar tissue that can easily swell when under strain or when the lymphatic system isn't working properly (having a cold, extensive scar tissue, or a lack of sufficient movement to drive the lymphatic system, since the lymphatic system, the body's sewage system, is driven by muscular movement, in a similar way to how the heart pumps blood). The same can be said for those who are immobile or who choose a sedentary life (ie, couch potatoes)

I suffer from the affects of a criminal assault I suffered at Avtron Mfg back in late 2007 and am pretty much in pain to one degree or another 24/7, and whether in a real car or while driving in GT6, I find that it helps to get up and do a little stretching from time to time, take a walk, etc.

It also helps immensely to carefully adjust the seating. AND... although it might or not help others, I have a couple of "bed buddies" (buckwheat filled 'socks' that can be heated in the microwave) that I usually warm up and set in the most affected areas (wrap the neck and stick one behind the left side of my back)... they usually help a lot for loosening (or keeping loose) my trapezious, strenocleidomastoideous, etc...

If you're not literally immobile, and you suffer from neck pain when driving, especially after only a short spell, I'd recommend upping your physical activity to stimulate your lymphatic system. Without movement, the toxins just build up in the various lymph nodes where toxins collect before being transported down to the liver and other filters for processing.

fwiw. (and sorry about the giant images)

One thing that I think aids comfort for me is mounting the steering wheel as low down as possible (without fouling your legs / knees).

I use a captains chair from a mini-van on my rig, armrests are there too if needed:lol:. Adjustable back and forth, lumbar support, fully reclinable, just like the real thing. When I had more time, I'd sometimes play 4-5 hours in a row, just breaking for liquid intake and outflow without a problem.

Great information. It is right around that 7th Cervical (giggity). I guess I really can justify making a seat, for my health of course, ahem, I think a g27 or thrustmaster will be healthier too *ahhhheem ahem cough cough cough*

Here is my deleterious setup

Ha!. Yes, What with the impending holiday season, I think you're right about that g27/thrustmaster. Although, if you're planning on a PS4, I guess Logitech might not be the right solution...Shame I don't have a wif or I'd tell her much the same. ;)

I sit in an office chair when playing. If you can, you might want to put some pillows up at the top of the couch back to help support your head and neck while driving, to mimic (to a certain degree) the kind of full-body support both Swerv Griffin and Johnnypenzo note they have in their high quality rigs.

Take breaks, Walk as much as possible, flap your arms, do jumping jumping jacks, swim if you can, etc, to keep the lymphatic system working properly, hot or even cold showers to reduce pain and inflammation, advil advil and more advil (ok, maybe not you but for me it's a daily requirement GT or no GT) ... and push come shove, acupuncture can help relieve some of it if it's chronic. I probably wouldn't even be able to walk today if it weren't for acupuncture (lower back injury during the assault too), although I'm still a bit leary about having needles stuck in my neck.

Oh, and I keep a couple of those cheap little battery powered massagers you can get from drugstores handy, as they help break up the muscles when they seize up. I often run through a couple sets of batteries with them propped in between my shoulder blades and the chair back when I'm sitting for prolonged periods of time.

'Nuff said.

The height, distance to steering wheel and pedals is all adjustable on my Racing Stations. The basic parameters were sourced from a BMW M3

yah. your rigs are pretty awesome.
My Rig just got a SERIOUS upgrade. Thrustmaster T500RS will be here in 3-4 days. Amazing price on the Cyber Monday Sale . As I am a Prime Member, they offered it to me for a 3 hr window at $150 off retail, plus another $70 off to apply for a card. I was always gonna buy one. Getting it for less than a T300RS is simply amazing. I put my immaculate G27 and immaculate G25 up for sale on EBay and Amazon both. I guess Christmas just came early, and I have a wheel that works with my new Pearl White PS4 as well. :)

Hi Tweet 420 - if you get any aches when using your setup, I strongly recommend a Wheelstand Pro - it enables you to get the angle, height and distance to the steering wheel absolutely perfect so you don't get any discomfort and can settle right back into the most comfortable seating position on your sofa. The only downside is that if you get an H pattern shifter the mounting bracket that comes with the stand puts it in an uncar like position - like the dash mounted shifter you get in modern vans such as the Ford Transit. I got round this problem by building a six inch wide sofa module to match the rest of the sofa (and not telling my wife until it was already fitted!)

May I be honest and say : that is NOT an ergonomic setup. In fact it is the opposite of ergonomic. Imagine driving a real car while buried in a sofa crouched over a coffee table. . .

Try a seating arrangement closer to a Grand Tourer - one that'll keep you comfortable driving all day across several States.

I've been using the same swivel chair for about five years now and there is as much cushion in the seat as a piece of mdf.. It's not a fancy one either, maybe for $25 bought it at Walmart. My TV in my room is also in an awkward position, so I have my feet up on top of my drawers and I sit in somewhat of a formula racer position...
