Need a bit of advice on a new laptop.

My 4GB hasn't really slowed down unless I'm playing Civilisation V on highish settings along with browsing the web. Under normal usage it doesn't slow noticeably really. But if you do find its not enough you can do it yourself easily enough with the correct tools at a later date 👍 I can happily watch iPlayer, browse the web and produce a keynote presentation with no lag.

My brother has the 13" Pro, he seems to give it absolute hell and it just keeps going, I'm impressed with it I must say. I think he has the default RAM, probably 4GB, and uses it for music production and the other day I noticed he had about a million tabs open in Safari (which is a massive resource hog, I've seen it occupying 4GB on my Pro before now) AND Chrome so it must be pretty good. It's not a gaming machine though as it uses the Intel integrated graphics and the resolution is something like 1280x800 I think.

But yeah, buying it with the standard RAM and upgrading it yourself is the way to go, Apple are just audacious when it comes to upgrades.

UPDATE ON POST #25

Now, the obvious choice for me is to go for a Mac, but I realise I could get a stunning Windows-based laptop for that money. I don't really know what I'm doing with computers (never had my own one before), so I'd like some advice from people who do. I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, just one for school work (word-processing, PowerPoint etc.) and browsing the net.

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Damn right. Everytime I see someone with a Mac I just think of all the goods they could've had with a Windows sytem for that money. But for as much as 999ÂŁ, you could get a really amazing laptop. You should check the Lenovo Ideapad Y580, comes with GTX660 and i7-3610QM.

But if you're willing to add quite some money of your own, to around 2000ÂŁ, you can get the brand new Eurocom Scorpius, with an amazing i7-3920XM, an extremely unnecessary 32 gigs of RAM, two nVidia GTX680M's in SLI. Probably the best laptop available at the time.

And Maingear and Clevo has some nice laptops available.

Wait till the Windows boys come out with a laptop that doesn't have a **** screen. Apple's retina-book raised the bar.
Also, this is stupid fanboying.
