I need a new 120gb hard drive. I think I will get a Seagate, as that is what I have
now(80gig) and it works great.

Basically, the three choices are: Barracuda 7200.7, Barracuda 7200.7 Plus(8mb
cache), or Barracuda 7200.7 SATA (8mb cache).

I will be paying for this, so the lower the price the better. I just want to know if the
SATA advantage is worth paying for? And if there are other choices(though I'm
pretty set on Seagate)??

Also, my system is pretty hot, so I figured an HD cooler wouldn't hurt. Any
suggestions(experience maybe?) on that?

Seagate and Western Digital are great HDDs. I've heard good things from Maxtor, but have never done business with them. I'm a bit uneasy about being the brand of choice at best buy.

If you can, order from http://newegg.com . Their prices are unbeatable. You can find most HDDs for less than retail stores, and you don't need to mess around annoying rebates.

As for SATA, make sure your motherboard supports it. If they don't, you need to buy a PCI card so you can connect the HDDs. SATA drives are a little faster than IDE. They also are great for future expansion. If your old Hard Drive was SATA, then you could make the 2 perform as one 200GB monster.

As for the HDD cooler, you might not need it. They are rather expensive. Look into more or better case fans. Be sure to check for more fan grates. If your case has a front fan spot, that would be good for HDD cooling. My 120MM blows directly onto it and it is always very cool and my HDD runs great.

Looks like, I won't be needing SATA then.

I already filled up all the fan spots and they are as loud as I want them.

My intake fan doesn't even blow on anything.

edit: I think I'll take the SATA afterall, there is not much price difference(just need a power adapter).

You'll need a SATA controller card, if your mobo doesn't support it bud. Those will cost you anywhere from $30 - $400, depending on what you want it to do.

the mfg website says it has the sata ports on it so, you're set to go dude :)
Serial ATA Interface
Promise 20376 controlls 2 Serial ATA ports in 150 MB/s operation mode and 1 Ultra DMA port

A friend of mine and I are thinking towards buying a mess load of big drives to fill my 10 bay tower and make a serious file server out of it. With current drive capacities I could get over 1TB of RAID 5 storage. The problem is supplying power to all of them (:

I just saw that there's a 160gb with SATA II, available.

Does it depend on the motherboard if NCQ works? and if so how would I know if mine supports it?

If I order OEM, do I need to get a data cable?
You will, unless you still have the one that came with your motherboard, which I doubt you still have (I bet you bought a retail computer (HP, Dell, Gateway, etc.)) they're not much, like $10.
