Thanks, guys. I need the basics of music rippin' and burnin'... assume for the moment that I have no idea how to do it (because I don't).

What I'd like are simple instructions and software recommendations for:

1) Burning D/L'd songs to an audio CD, to be played in a non-mp3 CD player.

2) Putting songs from albums I own onto a mix CD, to be played in a non-mp3 CD player.

3) Simple editing, such as fades, or cutting clips out of particular songs.

Thanks! If anybody has good links on how to do this, I'd appreciate that, as well.

For turning an audio cd into mp3's...

that will give yout he best quality sound around.

if you dont give a hoot about sound quality (or your like me and can't tell/don't care), then go with something like musicmatch. quick painless, and it will burn an entire cd into mp3's in about 15 minutes or less.

for editing mp3s (trimming, fading, amplifing etc...) i use cool edit 2000.

For 19 songs on Win Media Player, I can do it in about seven.
 
I just went out and bought Roxio easy CD creator recently, and I really really liked it! It has incredibly easy methods of burning Audio CDs if you're a beginner, and once you get a feel for what you're doing you can add in all kinds of cool features such as cross fading and noise reduction.
As for ripping CDs, I have always used MusicMatch Jukebox... I don't know where you would go about getting it, mine came with my computer. http://www.musicmatch.com ????
Whatever software you choose, enjoy, I can't even begin to count up all the $ I have saved from burning instead of buying CDs
