So I traded in my fat PS3 for a new slim one but before doing so I backed up my data on an external HDD and also my saved game files on a USB drive just in case.

After I got the new one I created a user under the same name as the old one and restored it but noticed my saved files weren't there. I always thought it would be included when you back up your data. Anyways, I copied over my saved game file of GT5 but when I started up the game I got a message saying "Load failed - this save data is from another user. You cannot use this save data. A new save data will be created."

I noticed there was another thread similar to this but it was never resolved. Has anybody else gone through the same problem? Many hours were put into this and the last thing I want to do is start all over again so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to hear about this. I for one don't have a clue on what to do but I thought I may as well post something here as a sort of "bump" for you and this thread. I hope you find what you need to 👍

I've done this a couple of times.

If this is something you've done during the 'out(r)age' of the PSN then you're going to be stuck for a day or two yet, since the true and total synching of your ps3 won't occur until you've been online and relinked to your psn account.

Normally, I'd say job done at this point, but since I've heard you have to use the same ps3 as you used for your last activation in order to reset your password, you may still have use for your 'fatty' for this and then reactivate it with your new 'thinny'

If you want to use your old save you will have to wait until the PSN is back up. Once it is, recover your PSN account to your new system and then sign in and the save will work again.

Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully it will work once PSN's back online and I won't need my old system because I've already traded it in.

You need to wait for the PSN to come back, reativate your PSN on your current PS3 and load the file again.

So I also emailed Sony about the issue and I called them as well. I got different responses from them. Lady on the phone said it's because of PSN and how it needs to sync with my account, like what you guys here said. But the reply through email was this:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write in concerning your question about using backed up saved game data. I understand how frustrating this can be.

In many cases saved game data cannot be backed up and used on another system due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) of the games. I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

A feature that is available through the PlayStation®Plus is Online Storage. You can back up your saved game data to Cloud and then download it to another PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system that your have your PlayStation Network account active on.

I hope this information has been helpful. I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to assist you. If you have any further questions and/or concerns regarding this or any other issue you may have with any PlayStation product please, email us again.

Regards,
Dan

I'll just have to wait for PSN to come back online and hope for the best.

In this case the first Sony answer is the right one. The second one is correct in a general sense but not in the sense of the OP.

I'm in exactly the same boat as the OP - I traded my Fatty for a Slim and now my GT5 and Burnout Paradise gave saves won't load as it thinks it's from another user. I'm using the same "login" name as before - but I am hoping things will be fine once PSN is back up and I can activate my system using my PSN ID.

Fingers crossed - I don't wanna play through GT5 again!!! (And spend hours looking for the perfect B-Spec driver names...)

Just an update now that PSN is back online I was able to getting everything sync and my saved data for GT5 restored. You guys were all right. Thanks!
