Hi gtp, I've been playing gran turismo for a while (Since gt 2) and with gt 5 I've started to play more than I would on the older games. So I've been thinking I should get a wheel, I've looked around and there's a huge choice of wheels to pick. I'm thinking of getting the g27, but then again the driving force gt is quite tempting (Because im saving more money :P) So what I want to know is the g27 worth the higher price tag then the other one. Thanks

Having used both, the DFGT is more user friendly, while the g27 is quieter and smoother, with better petals. DFGT is great for the price.

Goat's suggestion is spot on.

I'll add this too: if you're getting good with a DS3, you might struggle initially with any wheel. The feel of the game will be completely different, you might even describe it as "new". As with anything new, it will take a while to adapt and then gain from the benefits.

I went from a DF-Pro (DFGT without the cool RA features) to a G27 and LOVED the feel. But it took me over a week of a LOT of driving to get "better" with the G27. Now I wouldn't switch back :) Just take your time and enjoy your new stuff, without pressure of having to be instantly faster!

Thanks for the tips guys, I think I might go for the driving force gt, so I can get all of the dlc for gt5 with the money I've saved from getting a g27.

What is your budget? Consider moving up to a belt drive like Thrustmasters T500 which is the official wheel for GT5. Also Fanatec makes a decent wheel but they are very expensive for anything of the T500 quality. I use a T500 for iRacing and it is a very good wheel.

Hello there 👍 .

For a choice of wheels between the two that you are considering, the G27 is better if you are a hardcore racing fan who takes his racing games seriously. It's quieter and smoother than the DFGT and also has higher quality pedals with a clutch. But the DFGT is much more user friendly with it's RA dial allowing you to change settings while driving, PS3 buttons etc. while the G27 doesn't have the PS3 buttons because it was originally meant for PC sims only. Sometime in the late development, the internals were changed to allow to work with the PS3.

Knowing more about your budget would help a lot.

About $250 (Aussie dollar of course). And fanatec are hard to come by in australia. I've seen the t500 on various sites but that's out of my budget.

I started with a DFGT and still use just because I didn't want to invest so much initially. I totally love it although it is rather loud when driven spirited. The DFGT has small one inch pads for paddle shifters that move with the wheel it also has a hand shifter that is mounted on the right side. The DFGT is by far the most affordable. It does however, sufferer from these few drawbacks.

I forgot to mention the peddles. They are kinda small and there's only an accelerator and brake hence the user friendly comments.

I think DFGT is the best wheel when starting out. Don't waste a lot of money on a wheel until you decide of making sim racing one of your hobbies.

Agreed!!!! Unless money isnt an object!

I've spent a lot on iracing stuff and hardware. I started out with a DFGT and it's the only piece of hardware I haven't upgraded. I keep telling myself I'll consider upgrading it when it gives out, but I've completely abused it for a year and a half (~15-20 hours a week) and it still works great.

Personally, I think the G27 is worth the price vs the DFGT. The DFGT really does have crappy pedals. The G27 is a wheel you will be happy with no matter what comes out. It really hits that sweet spot: reasonable price, decent FFB, h-gate+clutch, decent pedals, and well built.

I'm going to say get the DFGT if you only play GT5, the H-shifter and clutch from the G27 are really, really badly implemented in GT5 (and only GT5) so that if you're not careful with the gas when you're shifting you'll end up in neutral, and even if you never mis-shift you're still a lot slower with manual shifting, though it is admittedly a lot of fun... But whenever I'm trying to win, I use the paddles anyway.

The DFGT and G27 are mechanically very similar, both use helical gears (the G25 and DFP used to use straight gears, which were very loud, the new wheels are both very quiet for gear-driven feedback wheels) and really, apart from the larger, leather-wrapped wheel of the G27 (and the extra pedal and shifter), there's not a huge amount of difference between the two.

Oh and another thing, if you're playing GT5 then it's safe to assume you're not sitting at a table or desk, so where would you mount the shifter? If it's just the wheel and pedals it's quite easy to come up with something halfway decent to hold it still, but unless you build a rig it'll be tricky to accommodate the shifter as well. Oh and let's not forget that the G27 only has six buttons under your thumbs, the DFGT has everything on the wheel itself which is really much better, I would've liked the option to have more buttons on my wheel but I can understand why Logitech said no.

All in all, the DFGT is perfect as a first wheel, for GT5, for people without a cockpit or the money/patience/desire/space to build one and therefore I'd recommend it over the G27.

DFGT - if its your first wheel, don't bother with anything more. LEARN to drive with a decent wheel, once you've got it down, THEN upgrade. You can get a DFGT for around $100 US if you find one on sale. No point in spending a ton money on something you might not even enjoy - just keep in mind, there is a learning curve to driving with a FFB wheel, so give yourself a couple of weeks to really get into the grove.

I can't figure out how to multi quote so im going to use @ instead.
@neema
No I play at a desk, I would be willing to make a DIY cockpit if need be.
I do play other racing games, the odd nfs and tdu2, but I hear tdu2 is crap with wheels anyway.

@tpark
I have some money. But I would rather keep it than spend it. That's why my budgets 250 bucks.

@mkush
Didn't I state in the OP that I play Gt5?

I also found a Fanatec 911 carrea wheel on a website going for 239 bucks. I went to the fanatec website and I saw they don't sell it there. Whats up with that?

It's a discontinued wheel. It was Fanatec answer to the DFGT when Gt5 was released. $239 is overpriced.

I can't recall where but I read something saying fanatec's overpriced in australia, so maybe that's why it's that expensive.

Pedals are extremely important and DFGT pedals are garbage.
I'd get a G27 to start and put a Nixim mod ver2 on the brake pedal. You'll be very happy with that for years.

I have Fanatec CSR Elite pedals which are sweet and have a real load-cell brake pedal.. but my Nixim mod G25 pedals (almost identical to G27 pedals) were really very good. Nixim mod made all the difference and it's like $30..

Just get a G27 to start is my advice.. a simracer with wheels for over a decade now.

No they aren't similar at all really. Gear driven is about where similarity ends.
G27 is much more durable, much faster, much more powerful, much better pedals, much better shifter paddles, list goes on and on. Just saying.. I hear a lot of people say that, you might just be repeating that, I don't know- but they are all very wrong. I've taken them both apart and owned and used both extensively (G25). No comparison. G27 is in an entirely different league mechanically.. especially the shaft bearing setup.
