Hey guys, I'm just getting into paintball and I need help picking a gun to start out with. I was looking at my local paintball store website (badlandspaintball.com) and saw that th Spyder MR2 with EYEs really caught my attention. Is it a good gun for woodsball? What other choices are good? I need an all around gun that's affordable, durable and that has different firing modes. If you could help me out that'd be great. I've asked my friends the same question but I don't think they know what they're talking about because they always say to get an Angle or tell me that the gun is garbage. Price-wise, nothing over $350 Canadian

I used a Tippman A5 in my paintballing days, and man oh man was it sweet. Later on you can add a flatline barrel and have in my opinion the best paintball gun on the market. (It also has a ridiculous rate of fire)

The flatline barrel puts a lot of spin on the ball and makes sniper shots possible

I'd say a Tippmann 98 Custom. The A5 is nice, but I've played with guys who've had them and gone back to 98s for reliability. If you're doing woodsball I wouldn't get too concerned with having a very electronic gun. More stuff to mess up, more batteries to eat through...So a 98 Custom with either a response trigger or E-grip. E-grip is battery powered, so watch the water and keep some batteries handy. Response trigger isn't that bad...I've played with someone's 98 that had one. I'm sure I'd like it more with time.

Eric, you're right about the A5, it can be picky, but I always found that with good quality paint I had very few issues, and for surpressing fire it's hard to beat the A5's feed system. For woods ball though I might have to defer to the 98 like you suggested.

Is there a flatline barrel for the 98? Because frankly that was the best thing I ever did for my paintball game back when I was younger.

Yep, that's available for the 98. The pneumatic feeding system the A5 uses (can't remember the name) is available as an accessory to the 98 as well. However, when I was using that 98 with the response trigger, it had a Halo or other sort of electronic hopper. That kept up just fine, and keeping it fully of batteries is probably something that can be better to deal with than what may be able to go wrong with that feeding system.

But, like you, I would probably get an A5 if I liked its looks and such more than the 98. Much like I decided to get a .22 caliber semi auto MP5 clone (GSG-5) over a Glock 17 9mm. I still want the Glock eventually, but I could actually buy the GSG myself, and for target shooting its a much more efficient gun, both in cost and for the sake of actually hitting what I'm aiming at. Its only drawback will be in a self defense situation. However, with a 24rnd magazine, and so far being able to hit within 6" at 100yd for the full magazine with iron sights, I'm more than confident that I could handle it if need be.

The important thing here is that you're looking at the brand known for durability and they are mostly mechanical, so you can figure out most problems on your own. The guys I played with that had Spyders and other guns like that play speedball for their university, so fire rate is ultimately more important than weekenders like us that wanna run around a woods.

So the A5 is the Ultimate choice for the money? Dosen't the E-grip come for extra price? I think that'd be more than I can afford but the magazine sounds awesome, I've been looking for something with a magazine so I can have a realistic experience. Does the A5 have EYEs or dose it not chop? Any other guns I should look at?

The only magazines I mentioned were for my .22 cal rifle. ;)

Yes, E-grip is extra, though you want to check out the response trigger too and weigh the pros and cons of each option. The A5's feeder is designed to not chop. Tippmanns were the only guns I was looking at when I was going to upgrade recently.

FWIW I never had issues with the feed system on my A5 so long as I used good (more expensive) paint. Spyders are like older Italian cars, bloody brilliant when they're working right but......

ok thanks! I looked at the A5. Does the response trigger come free? I l added it and there wasn't any price increase. I also added the other accessories I needed and the price comes for more than the Spyder with all the gear I need plus the co2. $480 vs $466. Is there anything else besides the A5?
